Continuing in the Discworld vein ....

I just finished Going Postal, and I think I adore Moist Von Lipwig, though I'm not entirely sure why. I even really like the whole idea of Moist and Miss Dearheart as a couple, despite having a huge knee-jerk DO NOT WANT reaction to the fiction trope of the scoundrel redeemed by the love of a good woman. As soon as I could see that the book was sort of heading in that direction, I cringed -- but then I slowly tumbled head over heels into "My god, they're really cute!", especially when he started calling her "Spike". He's such a little weasel and yet it's so hard not to like him. And I love the way that the ending leaves it kind of ambiguous as to whether or not Miss Dearheart is right that he's only fooling himself, or if he's right that he's still wearing a mask and he's managed to fool even her. And there is another Moist Von Lipwig book, I see! *wants*

I do too! And I can't figure out why, because he's a little rat fink. But I really like how Pratchett addresses the human cost of scams and fraud, rather than just patting the scammer character on the head and letting them play their games (which, as much as I love heist movies and shows, is something that always bugs me about them -- I think it bothers me more than most in Leverage, because they go to such effort to make the bad guys TEH EVOL and yet never address the systemic costs of someone, say, scamming a bank, as Pratchett does here).

Moist is brilliant. And Making Money is even better, well, so I thought, at any rate.

I could never figure out why I'm so attached to Moist either, but I am! And I was pretty wary of the Spike/Moist pairing at first, but they won me over somehow when I wasn't paying attention. :p Moist's interactions with Vetinari are highly enjoyable, also (but then Vetinari is.... well, Vetinari, and tends to do that to most scenes, regardless of who else is present).

That's exactly what happened to me with Spike/Moist -- while I wasn't looking, they slipped under my radar and suddenly my heart is doing little flippy things when he makes silly jokes to her. :D

They rank up there as my fav Discworld books

I can't wait to get Making Money -- but I feel like I should savor it, because I don't know if there will be any more Moist books considering Pratchett's health.

And it's supposed to be the next Discworld tv movie/miniseries too.

I know! I saw that! I would love to see Moist and Spike and Vetinari in action. :D

It seems oddly appropriate that the same guy who did Death in Hogfather has been cast to voice Mister Pump.

I haven't seen any of the Discworld adaptations. The thought hadn't even occurred to me to look for them! I must remedy this.

Borders has the Hogfather dvd. I'm not sure about Colour Of Magic, I watched it on Youtube.

I adore Moist, the two books so far, and Spike--OMG, SPIKE! She is incredible.

And I don't quite see it as "soundrel redeemed by love of a good woman"--because that's not how I see her. I like Vetinari's take on it in MAKING MONEY (I will not spoil anyone), but take a look at that one and let me know what you think.

*nods* I haven't read Making Money yet so I don't know how it shakes out (and am trying to avoid spoilers -- I'll be visiting the bookstore tomorrow!) but I had a very bad feeling when Spike was introduced that her main function in the book was going to be as a catalyst for Moist's redemption. I like how Pratchett subverts that, and yet, makes Moist a likable character despite his moral ambiguity, particularly since he is possibly an unreliable narrator about himself.

Going Postal is terrific as is Moist! :D I love seeing Discworld characters through the eyes of other Discworld characters, especially the way Moist sees Vetinari and the various Watch members he comes in contact with. Definitely a fave (and 'Making Money' is terrific, too). Have you listened to any of the books on tape? Stephen Briggs reads most of the recent ones (including 'Going Postal') - they are fabulous, and I highly recommend them if you like books on tape!

I really do love how the Discworld characters cross over between each others' books. :D

I don't listen to books on tape (or podfic) very much, but there are times when I like it, so I'll keep that one in mind! Thanks for the rec!

Oh, Going Postal is one of my favorites! The way he describes the clacks tower operators . . . anyway, yes. I agree with you, re: Spike/Moist.

I'm not sure that I like Making Money quite as well, but it's still very good, and Moist is still, well, Moist. *g*

The various computer metaphors for the clacks towers totally cracked me up (and the Smoking Gnu! *giggles*).

I shall be off to the bookstore tomorrow to replenish my supply of Pratchett!
