Being Human fanworks recs

This is really a tiny fandom, but not as microscopic as the last fandom in which I tried to find fanworks (Wiseguy), in that there actually is a fandom this time! This is clearly not a comprehensive list of fanworks, just the things that personally appealed to me; see the communities at the bottom of the recs list for more. I'm not putting individual spoiler warnings on these, so be aware that any of them may contain spoilers through episode 6.

Fic - gen

Bourbon Biscuits and Apple Crumble by [livejournal.com profile] chaletian (ensemble)
I love this; an old cookbook and a series of recipes hold together this lovely story about their odd, close-knit little household.

End of series drabbles by [livejournal.com profile] padfoot_uk (not technically drabbles, more like character vignettes)
Adorable and heartstring-tugging little glimpses into each character's head. This made me grin a lot.

Sacrifices by [livejournal.com profile] padfoot_uk (Mitchell, Annie)
Missing scene for episode 6, character study - Mitchell reflecting on his life and all the people who've sacrificed for him after being released from the hospital. Oh, Mitchell, you poor messed-up boy. Luckily he's not as alone as he thinks. ♥

All in the Stars by [livejournal.com profile] padfoot_uk (ensemble)
Lovely little slice-of-life with the housemates at home.

A Simple Cup of Tea by [livejournal.com profile] teal_talitha (Annie)
I really like this character snapshot of Annie shortly after her death. The only problem I had with the story was that some weird formatting made it hard to read, but it's a great look at her loneliness and her attempts to reclaim some semblance of normalcy in her (un)life.

Just Try It by [livejournal.com profile] theninth (Annie, Mitchell)
I dithered over whether to file this under pairings or gen, but figured it's more friendshippy than UST - a great little character moment with the two of them.

A Fickle Thing by [livejournal.com profile] jinxed_wood (Mitchell, George)
Missing scene for episode 6 - continuing the flashback after Mitchell saves George from the vampires. Good writing, wonderful Mitchell voice and just a very nice look at the two of them awkwardly starting to get to know each other.

So What Now? by [livejournal.com profile] padfoot_uk (Mitchell, George)
Also a missing scene/continuation of the episode 6 flashback. I could read these all day. :D

Postcards From Hell by [livejournal.com profile] jinxed_wood (Mitchell, mostly)
Dark, creepy closure to Fleur and Bernie's storyline from episode 4.

Survivor by [livejournal.com profile] jinxed_wood (Nina, ensemble)
There's so little Nina fic out there; it was a delight to find this great missing scene for episode 6, a glimpse of her first reeling efforts to deal with what's happened to her.

Fic- Various pairings

Just a Little Bit by [livejournal.com profile] eruvandeaini - Mitchell/Annie (very understated/UST-ish)
Annie misses chocolate; Mitchell has a "solution". Cute and surprisingly hot.

Things That Go Bump in the Night by [livejournal.com profile] ang_the_adverse - George/Mitchell, Annie POV, PG
This is really too cute, and it has a great Annie voice.

If you like George/Mitchell, there's some good stuff in the Being Human Yuletide archive.

Other Media and Communities/Websites

Official stuff: Really, you should just look up Being Human on Youtube, because the BBC has a bunch of clips and interviews and such. Something extra special are "prequels" for each character, little mini-episodes that were released as promos for the show, each featuring one of the housemates: George, Mitchell and Annie. There is also an official blog ('ware of spoilers for series 2 in the most recent posts!). I'm really fascinated by how much work the creator et al put into the world-building, right down to details like Mitchell's hospital ID (which is made from an early 1900s-era photo of him).

Handle With Care by [livejournal.com profile] qkellie is a sweet ensemble vid with episode 1 footage. I had a few nits with the editing, but overall quite liked it. :)

Human (song by the Killers) - sweet episode 1 character/group vid

[livejournal.com profile] lostarkeo made two very pretty Mitchell/Annie colorbars: one and two (plus a Gilbert one!). I don't think I'd go so far as to say that I ship for this show (I usually don't), but I do love this pairing.

[livejournal.com profile] aimsleydale has utterly priceless screencap reviews of the episodes.

[livejournal.com profile] beinghuman_news has daily news posts (yay!).

[livejournal.com profile] beinghuman_fic is a general fic comm, and there's [livejournal.com profile] beinghuman_fans for general show discussion, icon posts, etc.

Pairing comms: The ones that I'm aware of are [livejournal.com profile] vampwolf_love for George/Mitchell and [livejournal.com profile] vamp_n_ghost for Annie/Mitchell.

Anything else you've found that's good? Feel free to rec it in the comments! I'm especially on the lookout for good vids and team/family gen.

So, based on your squee, I started watching it too. I love it! Nothing like having a bit of brit tv! But I'm still halfway- through the series, so I'll hold off for fic and such, but thanks for the recs! They're appreciated :-)

Thanks a lot for the links. :)
I watched eps 1-3 now and the pilot and hope to find some time in the next few days to watch the rest. I love these charakters and their friendship so much.

oh, thanks for all the recs - I'll have fun going through these.

also, here's another vid that I'm not sure if you've seen: Wounded (http://butterfly.livejournal.com/1270550.html) by Butterfly. It's a simple concept, but quite well executed, I think.

Ooh! Thank you very much for the rec! :D I'm craving vids for this show, and having a lot of trouble finding any that I like.

I'm insanely in love with Being Human right now, and I wish it wasn't such a tiny fandom. (And like you, I really wish for more post-flashback fic!) But there is some really good stuff out there. Thanks for your links - I think there are a few I hadn't seen. I linked some I enjoyed here after my first pass through the fandom.

(Hi! I recently friended you - hope you don't mind.)

Oh, friend away! Always happy to have new people to share the love! I am crazy in love with this show, and the fandom is so very tiny ... of course, SGA fandom has spoiled me horribly for that! But there's such tremendous potential for missing scenes and fic that explores the show's internal mythology... *wants*

of course, SGA fandom has spoiled me horribly for that!

You and me both. It was so good to be part of the Fandom of the Moment for once! Sadly, that doesn't happen to me very often. *sighs* I've made a few Being Human posts, and the contrast is really stark, getting barely any replies at all.

There's so much potential for fic, and I wish I was better at writing myself. I'm really fascinated with the relationship between Mitchell and George before the original pilot - before Mitchell killed Lauren and went on the wagon. What was going on in George's mind, becoming friends with a killer? To what extent did he let himself be aware of that? And oh, the whole business with George's Star of David ... I love that to itty bitty pieces, really I do. Also, what Mitchell and Annie know about death ... although I expect we'll get more about that next year.

Sorry, I'll stop rambling at you now. *g*

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, by all means, ramble away. *g*

I know what you mean ... prior to SGA, I went through a lot of microfandoms and fandoms that had already had their heyday 10 or 20 years ago. It was heady and fun to be part of the Big Thing in fandom! Ah well, all good things come to an end ...

I'm really fascinated with the relationship between Mitchell and George before the original pilot - before Mitchell killed Lauren and went on the wagon. What was going on in George's mind, becoming friends with a killer? To what extent did he let himself be aware of that?

It's really a curious dynamic, especially seeing how close they'd become by the start of the series -- and how much colder Mitchell was in the flashback in episode 6 to meeting George. Being around George lightened him up a lot, I think -- it's obviously hard to draw comparisons between Mitchell at the beginning of the pilot (before he goes on the wagon) and subsequently in the series because of the actor change, but I don't think the difference that we saw between Mitchell pre-abstinence and post-abstinence is nearly as great as the difference in him pre-George and post-George. And, yeah ... I get the idea in the episode where George finds out about Lauren that George was, perhaps deliberately, not letting himself think about that aspect of Mitchell's life. Like he said to Annie, he'd forgotten what other vampires were like -- he knew, but he'd gotten used to Mitchell the laid-back joker, and I think he'd managed to blind himself to Mitchell the killer. (And you know, I think that's still true -- even when confronted by evidence of what Mitchell's capable of, George is still convinced that it's some kind of aberration, that Mitchell is better than that. I guess it's partly because George is simply too nice to believe that his friend is capable of that kind of behavior, and partly because of the faith that he has in Mitchell to be able to rise above his (Mitchell's) vampire nature.

/ramble

And I agree with you about the Star of David -- it's a really great twist, and I love how it's quietly introduced as a bit of characterization in the very beginning, but doesn't become a plot point until, what, episode five? I love that kind of planning on the writers' part.

Absolutely agreed - I don't see as huge a contrast between the two Mitchells as some do, and at any rate, both Mitchells are very relaxed and laid-back around George. PreGeorge!Mitchell in the flashbacks is so much colder and more distant. (You've seen the prequel clips, right?)

Even when he finds out about Lauren and is really quite desperate about it, he complains about "attacking our friends and turning them into monsters" - it's how close to home Mitchell's struck that's bothering him the most, or at least, that's what he's letting himself be upset about. He's still ignoring whatever Mitchell may have done to people he doesn't know.

Oh! And I just remembered - later, when Josie tells him about Mitchell having fallen off the wagon, doesn't it look like the part that bothers him most is that it's intruding on the hospital, their pseudo-human life?

And you know, I think that's still true -- even when confronted by evidence of what Mitchell's capable of, George is still convinced that it's some kind of aberration, that Mitchell is better than that.

Of course it all fits perfectly - George has a lot invested in compartmentalising, with his own werewolf self, and it isn't until the finale that he lets himself acknowledge that as part of himself. It makes perfect sense that he'd apply a similar filter to Mitchell's vampiric life: It's not part of this, their normal life, and so it doesn't really count, right? It's not really real.

Now I wonder if he'll look differently at Mitchell, having accepted more of his own dual nature ...

And I agree with you about the Star of David -- it's a really great twist, and I love how it's quietly introduced as a bit of characterization in the very beginning, but doesn't become a plot point until, what, episode five? I love that kind of planning on the writers' part.

Yay! I'm really thrilled by that. The Star of David was there from the pilot on, and you never think there's anything more to it than what it says about who George is - and then ... Fantastic. I love it when little details that haven't been hung on the wall in an obvious Chekhov's Gun kind of way suddenly become important.

I do wonder about George's faith, and what it means when he hands his Star of David over to a vampire for safekeeping, and how Mitchell reacted to finding out he wasn't affected by it at all, and why Mitchell never told George, and ... oh, there's so much in all of this!

See, I rambled at you again. Can you tell I really don't have many people to talk to about this show? *g*

*hearts* and *love* Such a COOL show!!! After watching eps 1-6, I was curious and watched the pilot and it was actually quite good :-) I'm glad the show got picked up, and Thank You for recommending it!!!!

Squee! I'm delighted that you like it! I'm crazy in love with it right now, and I finally did watch the pilot and enjoyed it; it's almost like reading fanfic, because Mitchell and Annie are so different, but it's canon and it's interesting to see how various threads from the pilot (like Mitchell's coin trick) were picked up in the next episode in different ways. I also didn't realize he'd gone "on the wagon" so recently until watching the pilot!
