"One working stove in all the officer tents and you're taking up the entire top of it? At least share, Margaret!"

"For your information, Captain Pierce," Margaret snapped, placing her body in the way and fending off yet another attempt to remove her metal bowl of water and replace it with a coffeepot, "I still have standards that even this place hasn't managed to strip from me yet, and I am not, I repeat not, washing my hair in cold water unless it's over your dead body!"

"Someone pass the popcorn, please?"

"-- I'd like to have just one date without your friend Steve coming along," Vickie whispered fiercely back, handing the bucket of popcorn across Robin's lap.

That was one Centauri word G'Kar didn't know, but it made Londo stop in his tracks and swivel to aim a death glare at the rakish young courtier who had spat it at G'Kar. Seeing that he had the Prime Minister's attention, the rake grinned. "You heard me. If you're going to parade it around at court, you should make sure your --" That word again. "-- is on a leash."

It was certainly not the worst thing anyone at court had said to him, and G'Kar was mildly fascinated by the vehemence of Londo's reaction. By now Londo had his temper under control, although he was clearly still furious. "Speaking from experience, Malvoli? Oh, yes, I remember seeing you in Cartagia's court, panting at his feet. I do not have any need of a leash at the moment, but if I ever find myself wanting one, I will be sure to ask you to lend me one from your own collection."

With that he strode off, G'Kar in his wake, leaving the courtier sputtering angrily behind him.

"What does that word mean?" G'Kar asked quietly, once they were more-or-less alone, and repeated it as well as he could.

Londo glanced away, not meeting his eyes. "It is a -- an animal, kept for hunting. We think of them as loyal, very fierce, and not too bright."

"Oh. You know, that sounds more like a compliment than anything, aside from the last part, but I'll magnanimously overlook it."

"Thank you." The anger and subsequent shame had begun to fade from Londo's face; his lips twitched.

"If you do need to put me on a leash for propriety's sake, I don't mind."

"Stop it," Londo hissed at him. "I'm not putting a leash on you, don't be absurd."

"I'm sure I could pick out a very fetching collar. Maybe one that complements your coat?"

The look Londo gave him suggested that he was no longer sure if G'Kar was joking or not.
