Whumptober Day 2: Sewer (Murderbot)
This is one of those times when I just ran off with the prompt as inspiration and it's not actually whumpy at all. (At least not in any way except the most incredibly minor petty way.)
No. 2: “You’ve got a lot of nerve to dredge up all my fears.”
Prophecy | Sewer | Taking Accountability
Murderbot, 380 wds, gen, could be TV-verse or bookverse somewhere post-Exit Strategy
Also posted on Tumblr.
We splashed into the water at the bottom of the aqueduct, and my humans immediately started complaining. Never mind that I was very resourcefully leading them out of the hotel currently being surrounded by company security looking for them. No, it was all "Is this a sewer?" and "Do you know what I just stepped in?" and "No shower will ever get me clean after this."
Quiet! If you have to talk, use the feed, I told them in the firewalled feed I had set up for us.
I had allowed them one light (Mensah was holding it) while I used my infrared vision and drones to scout without giving us away any more than absolutely necessary. I had two drones watching our backs and had spliced one of their infrared camera feeds into Gurathin's augments (he was in the back) to keep him from walking into a wall and knocking himself out, because I didn't need to rescue a drowning augmented human on top of trying to keep the rest of them together.
And trying to keep them quiet. Which was useless anyway, they sounded like a herd of aggressive megafauna splashing through the water, but at least we could try to avoid triggering any number of monitoring devices that might be activated by human voices.
They did keep it in the feed after that, except for a few involuntary exclamations of "Ick!" or "Ugh!" that I decided not to do anything about because humans were just like that and in my experience, trying to stop them only made them worse. Ratthi sent us all a joke image of a dark underground space with some green fauna that hadn't been in any of my education modules and caption text that said NINJA TURTLES NOW HIRING. Presumably this was from a serial I hadn't seen, referencing our present circumstances. Some of my other humans sent amused sigils and Gurathin just sent an annoyed ????, which echoed my thoughts irritatingly well.
However, as long as my humans were entertaining themselves quietly (ish), they weren't bothering me or getting in the way of my line of fire, so I decided not to complain about it. I filed a copy of the image in my temporary storage to ask ART about later.

I really enjoy the prospect of Gurathin and pop culture just not mixing.

I do feel for the humans here: I would totally be stomping around like megafauna and unable to stop verbalizing as I stepped on unexpected things.

And for absolutely no other reason. Of course, Murderbot. Of course.
