Murderbot fic recs part 1: Bookverse Short Gen [9 fics]

See also my Murderbot recs from May over at recthething, when I was first getting into it (all bookverse).

So I've been wallowing around in all the good fic in this fandom lately, and I'm finally getting around to posting some recs here. I'll start off with something pretty basic: bookverse gen featuring a variety of characters.


Coming back (a little changed) by MalTheMaleficar (Mensah-centric, 2000 words, post-book 7)
Murderbot is back briefly in the Preservation system with ART, and Mensah deals with her feelings about watching it change into a different person than the person it used to be with her, and find its place somewhere else. The parallels with having a kid grow up and leave home are very nicely done -- not heavy-handed but bittersweet in the same way.

Library by beeayy (Gurathin & Bharadwaj, 2100 words, pre-canon)
New to Preservation, Gurathin tries to navigate a new-to-him culture, is amazed by the existence of libraries, and makes his first friend on Preservation. (Also works pretty well as TV-verse backstory, give or take a few different details.)

Sunshine by polyhexian (MB & ART & Mensah's family, 1200 words)
Murderbot suffers through a beach party and has to hold a baby. Cute and full of found family feels.

Soft by xinger88 (MB & ART & Gurathin, 800 words)
Murderbot's two favorite assholes start a sort of memorabilia gifting competition. Too adorable.

Past Warranty by quintessence_of_dust (MB & PresAux, 3100 words)
Murderbot attends a birthday party for one of the team members and its friends want to know how old it is, with canon-typically-horrible results (but found family sweetness to follow).

Drones of a Feather by gizm_o (MB & PresAux, 2100 words)
MB's humans go bird watching on Preservation; MB comes along for security purposes.

on-call by torpidgilliver (Ratthi & Gurathin, 1700 words)
Gurathin and Ratthi's side of Murderbot calling them for help in Fugitive Telemetry.

Unauthorized Maintenance by broken_risk_assessment_module (Gurathin & MB & ART, 2900 words)
Fugitive Telemetry tag. Murderbot finds out that Gurathin's vision augments are failing due to planned obsolescence, which of course means he gets press-ganged into letting ART do experimental brain surgery on him.

System System. Assistance by Rosewind2007 (Gurathin & OC, 2000 words, Exit Strategy missing scene)
Cute missing scene after Murderbot collapses in Exit Strategy, in which the bot pilot of the gunship tries to get Gurathin's attention via his augments and is wildly excited to tell him about the big adventure it just had.
