Actually, his daemon being constantly in flux - including the inexplicable-before-the-war soul creatures shape - while they both pretend she isn't seems very appropriate for his eventual role in the show. He hasn't yet settled into his adult shape either!

(Since his soul shape is probably-though-not-definitely female, an orca would be great. But highly inconvenient on a space station.)
I forgot about the gender-swapped aspect and agree Earthforce probably does not see many aquatic daemons unless they can fit in a reasonably efficient tank, but also Garibaldi would headbutt a yacht.
He probably should be some kind of dog ...
I have no real suggestions! I know much less about dogs than I do about other kinds of animals. Perhaps one of the working dogs that are steadfast but will also go kind of nuts if prevented from doing their duty?
