Still MASH, everything is MASH
I'll get back to the later seasons in order soon - currently I'm stopped at the start of season 9 while going back to rewatch 6-8 with Sheron, and I'm absolutely loving it; there's so much growth for everyone! In the meantime, when I need a fix from an episode I haven't seen yet, I'm going back to watch episodes kind of randomly from the earlier seasons, whichever ones catch my eye as interesting-looking or potentially useful for vidding.
Under the cut, stray thoughts on some of the bottle or limited-cast episodes from seasons 4-5: 4x7 "The Bus", 4x19 "Hawkeye", and 5x11 "Hawkeye Get Your Gun".
"Hawkeye" is such a weird nothing of an episode considering that it was entirely focused on the main character while he's concussed and hurt, and yet. AND YET! I feel like we learned absolutely nothing about him the entire time (except that he lived in Boston for a while, but his backstory in the first few seasons is all over the place; he was supposedly from Vermont in one episode, too). This episode was like 2 or 3 good bits (Hawkeye playing with the kids!) and not really a whole lot otherwise. I don't think my expectations were terribly high, and yet somehow it underwhelmed them anyway!
I mean you could've had more of the episode involve Hawkeye talking about his friends or working through some kind of personal issue. Or more stray little cute bits. (Trying to power through his concussion was delightful, if only he'd actually been doing more than just walking around some family's house while he was at it.) We find out way more about him as a person in literally any episode in which he writes to his dad.
I know the entire conceit of the episode is that he's the only canon character who appears in it, but what I wouldn't have given for some scenes back home - or fanfic missing scenes, really I'd take anything. Did they know he was missing, were they worried, or was it just that this random teenager showed up in Uijeongbu like "We found your lost American GI and he's driving us crazy, come get him pls." And then SOMEONE has to deal with a concussed and hyper Hawkeye on a 20-mile jeep ride back to the 4077. Fanfic when?
The end scene was sweet, though - I liked that he came back to thank them, that he'd hand-picked gifts that everyone in the family would like or appreciate, and that they did pretty clearly understand that he was behaving like that because he was concussed and scared.
"Hawkeye Get Your Gun" on the other hand was great, and addresses something that I had noticed about him from time to time, which is that unlike most of the other characters, he doesn't carry a gun when he goes out in the field. I had figured it was an intentional character touch, and I loved the confirmation here: that he had to be ordered to take it with him, then had to be ordered to fire it, then actually refused to point it at people who were literally shooting at them. HAWKEYE. ♥ (That being said, I get Potter's frustration with him under the circumstances.) That whole episode was a really sweet one for the two of them. Potter letting him sleep at the Korean hospital, and calling him Hawkeye when he wakes him up! I like how much they obviously like each other, even while Potter is having to deal with the no doubt endless exasperation of being Hawkeye's boss.
And "The Bus" was also a lot of fun. I would happily take that exact plot with almost any combination of characters - it's just so fun watching different combos stranded together and playing off each other (provided there are at least two of them so there's someone else to interact with, Hawkeye).

I thought about that episode after having my own concussion. I rambled a little, but nothing like that!
I would certainly read your fic related to it! (hint, hint)
I also remember that Hawkeye wouldn't take a gun, and I still love that about him. Potter chose t be in the military. Hawkeye never did, and he wouldn't kill. If only more people were like that!

Yeah, it's definitely an impressive performance! And yet so weirdly pointless. If he's going to be free-associating anyway, does it all have to be about musical theater and girls he dated in college? There could at least have been some kind of progression with the family he's staying with, other than just Hawkeye being constantly underfoot and weirding them out. And so much hurt/comfort potential with absolutely no comfort, including from the people he's staying with, other than offering him water and food.
A missed opportunity, as you say!
(Urge to write fic .... increasing.)

<33333 It's a good thing that life doesn't imitate art to that degree!
