New show running away with me

Before I forget, my story "Night Ops" was nominated in the Isis Awards (SGA het awards). It's in the Rodney/Jennifer category.

In other news, a new show seems to be walking off with me. Well, an old show, actually -- "Wiseguy". I watched it back when it was originally on TV (1987-90 or so) but I was, well, 11 at the time, and it was so dark and heavy that I never enjoyed it all that much as a kid.

But this is a seriously awesome show! It's fantastically well written and well acted. The characters are likable and yet ambiguous enough that you never quite know what they're going to do in the morally difficult situations in which they're constantly finding themselves. It's the story of a guy who goes undercover to bust organized crime, and the ways in which his job and his basic decency come into conflict as he's forced to do increasingly horrible things in order to make his cover convincing -- as well as becoming close to the people he's trying to bust. The show operates in long story arcs, so you have time to get to know the cast of each new arc, as well as the ongoing characters (the main character, his FBI "handlers" and his family).

I remember bits and pieces (including a couple of really lovely character scenes; this show has some awesome friendship and h/c moments) but I really don't remember major plot points and I'm just now through the Steelgrave arc (mainlined over the last two days) -- plus a couple of episodes from a later arc that I remembered well enough I just *had* to jump forward and watch them -- so please don't spoil me for any major plot events or character deaths!

I suspect this is a show for which fandom and fanfic are going to turn out to be virtually nonexistent, which is too bad because it has some wonderful story potential.

Oh, I know your love...and a little of your frustration. I'm completely and totally in love with the old TV Show Maverick (which was on in the early sixties, I think?). I'd do anything to see it "fanned" with stories and the like. What's funny is, I just found out that it had a comic series based on it, which I've been eyeing on E-Bay. Maybe Wiseguy did too?

[identity profile] tipper-green.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and congrats! Well deserved! Night Ops was great!

Thank you! Congrats to you too -- you are also up in the same category with "Hell & High Water". :)

That's really the problem with getting into old shows, isn't it? They just don't have the active fannish involvement of new shows, even relatively obscure new shows. Though I haven't gone poking around for fic yet (for fear of spoilers), so I really can't say what the fandom is like yet.

[identity profile] tipper-green.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I was nominated? Well, that's nice! Is it funny that I had no idea? I went to the website and yes, there it was. Cool! Always nice to be nominated. LOL!
ratcreature: RL? What RL? RatCreature is a net addict. (what rl?)

Actually I think Wiseguy had a smallish slash fandom, but less gen. It definitely existed. It was mostly zines though of course back then. When I came into online fandom via TS I still encountered it in crossovers every now and then in slash stories. Maybe some of that is now online?

Now I'm really curious who the major slash pairing(s) would have been in that fandom. The one that naturally leaps to mind would involve a character who is very much not Hollywood-handsome, and much as I hate to think of fandom being that shallow, well ... sometimes fandom is that shallow. *g*

The stories I've seen around were Vinnie/Sonny, I think? But really I was never in that fandom, so I have no idea who these people were.

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that one makes sense (from a fandom perspective, anyway). It's a relationship with a lot of love and hate tangled up in it, and this strikes me as a show where the fandom would tend to go for bitter/angry slash more than friendship slash.

[identity profile] kodiak-bear.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations on the nomination! You are very deserving of it.

I do remember Wiseguy but I didn't watch. When it aired I was really busy in RL with sports and I had a horse and friends etc and I hardly watched any tv during those years. I remember watching Funniest videos with my parents from time to time but that's about it back then.

Now I'm curious, might have to see if I can find it. Is it out on DVD?

I'm a big TV buff lately, collecting old DVD sets etc. I recently got Remington Steele and it was so much fun to rewatch that show. Very entertaining TV.

Thank you. :)

It's on DVD, but they're out of print and very hard to find. You can buy them from Amazon Unbox (which is what we've been doing) or Netflix them. I imagine that the bigger download communities would probably have them, too, or someone would be able to upload them.

I hope you're able to get your hands on it -- it's really a fantastically well-written show, and knowing your particular leanings in h/c, I think you might find a lot to like. *g*

[identity profile] kodiak-bear.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a netflix acct and we haven't even used it in months so I can get them that way. Must do this for the holidays! Heeee. With hubby away this christmas I got to buy all my own presents and I bought the Andromeda collection (it has its moments), Northern Exposure series (been wanting this for ages and while I know it gets a bad rap because it's Alaskan show filmed in Seattle or wherever they did it, I so loved the characters!), and the Dark Angel series. My DVD sets are beginning to take over the house as much as my books!

[identity profile] auburnnothenna.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, then you're just starting the second arc. It was my favorite. I will not spoil. I will not. Okay, but it's okay to say how much I loved Roger Lococco? That show was smart.

Now I'm reminded of it, it goes on my list of DVD sets to get.

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh! I remember Lococco; he was my sister's favorite character when we watched it as kids (though both of us seem to have gravitated heavily towards McPike this time around). I'm looking forward to getting started!

Apparently the DVDs are out of print and really hard to get. Amazon.com Unbox has it for download, though.

Never heard of Wiseguy, but might just have to go see if I can find it - it sounds intriguing! Congrats on the nomination, very deserving of it too!

I've recently watched all of the Magnificent Seven TV show, and although I'm not about to go all fannish on it, I have read a few fics by Tipper and NotTasha, so must like it a bit!! Don't mention the SGA/M7 crossover I'm struggling to write...just don't!! *argh* Ezra seems to be my fav though I can't seem to write him *sulk*.

Thanks. :) I've been tempted to watch M7 just so that I can read Tipper and NT's fics!

I'm certainly enjoying the few I've read so far!! And I can recommend the show if you want a bit of fun with some good friendship bits here and there and nice angst thrown in from time to time too!

[identity profile] tipper-green.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, don't! Well, NT's are spectacular, but mine are error-riddled. I keep telling myself I'll go back and revise, but...eh...doesn't seem to be happening.

Odd thing about M7 -- the fic was much better than the show. Bad eh?

If you like, I can send you the DVDs. For when you're bored. :) Only 23 eps.

[identity profile] renisanz.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I was introduced to this show when my mom got it on DVD as an anniversary gift to my dad a few years ago. I was like, "Hey, that's Kevin Spacey! ...Wow. He's old." :P

But he was really awesome as Mel Proffitt (sp?).
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I remember Kevin Spacey being on it. This show actually has a ton of guest stars and recurring characters that I've seen in other things; one of the first arc episodes had a really, really young David Marciano (Ray from Due South).

[identity profile] renisanz.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and dude who played Cory's dad on Boy Meets World was on there. It was really weird seeing him in such a drastically different role.

[identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Its an amazing show, one of the fist dramas that ongoing storyarhs and very nitty gritty. However, towards the last season it got very unwatchable, but I think the first two season were made of win and as you said dark , but very cool.

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
There was one episode in season three that totally made it worth it for me (knowing what I like, you can probably guess the episode *g*) but I agree that the writing was much stronger early on.

The shows that I've been watching lately are, to be honest, not really all that strong in the writing department (much as I love them), which makes it really a joy to watch a show that's genuinely well-crafted in long-running arcs.

[identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, remind me not to ever reply to a post while on break at work and tying way too fast...fist drama..eh? Slip of the brain maybe :-P

I loved the Kevin Spacey storyline...my mind is fuzzy on any eppys..would you be talking about the one involving Mel Profit?
ext_1981: (Vala autumn)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
No, I was talking about season three episodes -- the one where Frank got shot. Even all those years ago, it pushed my specific h/c buttons like whoa, and I'm amazed at how much detail I still remember considering how young I was. But we're halfway through the Profitt arc now, and finding much to squee about. *g*

[identity profile] jaekayelle.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Wiseguy is one of those shows that actually holds up storywise over time. The long story arcs were great but so were some of the one-shots. Frank McPike, Lifeguard and Roger Lococco were my guys, but Ray Sharkey pretty much took acting to a whole new level of Wow! *g* The Sonny Steelgrave arc positively crackled from the fantastic writing and acting. Haven't seen it in years, but now I'm remembering all kinds of standout moments. I'll keep them to myself, though, so you don't get spoiled. Lucky you, watching it for the first time all over again. :-)

The fandom was small at the time. No idea what's on the net. Must go look...
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
McPike is totally stealing my heart, though I love all of the guys. But I really have a soft spot for the cranky little bastard.

We're halfway through the back half of season one (the Mel Profitt arc ... mmm, crazy Kevin Spacey!) and had to stop to sleep. Still totally hooked, and getting even more so. *g*

[identity profile] ceitie.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think that Astolat has some Wiseguy slash stories on her website, but that's all I know about this show's fandom.
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm...! I'll have to look once I'm far enough along to not be so fearful of spoilers as I am now. I strongly suspect that any slash pairings in this fandom would not be the specific characters I'm interested in, though. This show pushes my "family of choice" buttons in a major way, but it thoroughly pings me as a show where enemy-slash would be the fannish crack of choice.

[identity profile] flingslass.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, Ken Wahl. He was pretty decent looking :)
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
He certainly is easy on the eyes ... though I seem to be gravitating towards the supporting cast as far as favorite characters go.

[identity profile] scarym1.livejournal.com 2008-12-17 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Wiseguys sounds vaguely familiar.

Congrats on the story nomination. : )
