No True Pair Sept. 6 - Algy & Erich
September Six - Algy packs a lunch/meal for Erich
It wasn't as distracting as Algy would have expected to have von Stalhein along with them. He had a way of fading into the background when he wanted to, but it wasn't just that; it was also that he seemed to be going out of his way not to make waves, going along politely with all their suggestions, moving uncomplainingly through rough terrain that must have been hard on his bad leg as they searched for the hidden war-era bunker that was the reason they were here in the first place. By the time they returned to the 'plane to open the lunch hamper—well past lunchtime, with everyone cranky and covered in mud and bugs—he was limping heavily, looking grey and tired.
He looked genuinely surprised when Algy shoved a sandwich wrapped in waxed paper into his hands.
"What, did you think we were going to chain you in the plane and starve you?" Algy asked, ignoring the pleased look and faint smile that he got from Biggles, who was serving himself. "Sorry, the bread and water rations are on backorder. You could always take the meat and cheese off the sandwich and just pretend."
"If you packed these, I'm more concerned about being poisoned," von Stalhein murmured, unwrapping his sandwich.
Algy looked at him in disbelief—for a second or two, before he realized what was happening, experienced a moment of inner resistance, and then just decided to go along with it. "No dessert for you, then."
Biggles looked amused and quietly delighted. "Please pass the lemonade flask."
"I should pour it on your head," Algy muttered, giving it to him.
There very much was an extra slice of cake in the hamper, and it was the one with the cherries that Algy had (reluctantly, with great annoyance) noticed that von Stalhein had taken an extra helping of when Biggles had him over for dinner the other day. But Algy wasn't telling him that until the very last minute. Let him twist in the wind a little and wonder if it was a joke or not.
