Jimmy Buffett

There aren't very many singers who really make me sad when they go; I think the last one was Tom Petty, the soundtrack of my college years. But, well, Jimmy Buffett. Strangely enough, I was just listening to some of his songs yesterday because One Piece always makes me think of it.

I first heard his music on a dubbed cassette that I got for my birthday when I was like 13 or 14, which didn't actually have his name on it, so I didn't know who it was, but I listened to it over and over. Something about it really caught my attention. I always mildly regretted not ever seeing him live, and I think I would have enjoyed it. He was always very much his own thing, which wasn't actually something that would have been my thing in general (do I care about chilling on a beach or running away on a boat to be a pirate? actually no!!) but he absolutely *owned* it, and I loved his music.

Here, have some Buffett.

Margaritaville from 1978, because of course:

My favorite lesser-known Buffett song - Take Another Road:

My favorite Jimmy Buffett song from the first album I listed to, "Volcano":

Actually, this one is a tremendous toss-up. I just kind of love this whole album?? I'm going to pick Boat Drinks for the entire experience of being a teenager in Alaska in approximately 1989 listening to an album by a singer known for songs about chilling in the sun on the beach, because that's actually more or less what this song is about:

But I'll add one of the others I love from that album, Stranded on a Sandbar:

My literal actual favorite dumb Jimmy Buffett song title, which I probably think about 15 times on every vacation I go on - The Weather is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful:

And - okay, one more - I heard this song in the grocery store literally yesterday - Friday - because the universe is throwing Buffett at me without mercy. Let's wrap up with Cheeseburger in Paradise:

AND one more bonus for its sheer tendency to get stuck in my head, Growing Older But Not Up:

It's sad to lose our favorite musicians. *hugs* May he rest in peace.

He was a big part of my youth as well. And it's sobering for me to see that he was only 14 years older than me when he died.

I had forgotten that he wrote Come Monday. That was a great song too.

I cried when I read the headline last night. Always loved his music and will miss him. He was revered like Harry Chapin still is. He will always be remembered.

I've loved his music too, back in the day.

His books were entertaining, too. If you can find it, try listening to A Salty Piece of Land (the song, though the book is good). That and Changing Channels are two of my favorites.

My husband is a huge Jimmy Buffet fan. I took him to a concert a few years ago. It was everything we were hoping for. He will be missed, but what a legacy he left us in his music!
