Summer of Horror!
Summer of Horror revealed earlier this week, and it is horrifically lovely!
I loved my gift:
All of the Curses (Biggles books, Biggles & Algy & von Stalhein, gen, 6700 wds)
The atmosphere was decidedly eerie. It was early afternoon, but there were no children running around, no people chatting, the only sign of life was a dog barking away in one of the yards.
Creepy rural villages, how I do love them, and this is a highly entertaining trek through one! Biggles & co are investigating Weird Stuff after the second world war, von Stalhein is doing likewise for his side, and they clash in a village that's experience crop circles and other weirdness.
Preliminary recs:
Enlightenment (MCU, Carol Danvers + Monica Rambeau + Misty Knight, 2900 wds, gen)
This is simply delightful! Really an excellent job of blending the wonder of the cosmic MCU with the mix of gritty street crime and absolutely magical weirdness of the Defenders MCU and making it work. Misty Knight: Ghost Puncher is truly the Misty we deserve. And, oh, Carol. <3
Dark Secret (Barbie dolls, art, mature for gore)
This Barbie is a serial killer. I was delighted to see Barbie toys in the fandom listing and this did NOT disappoint. Perfectly candy-colored and creepy, A+ execution of the concept.
Paid in Full (Biggles books, Erich & Algy, 8600 wds>
Absolutely wonderful prickly-and-reluctantly-trusting Algy & Erich fic in which they are forced to work together to survive a night in a creepy roadside hotel, set in the post-Hatchet/post-Looks Back era. Pitch-perfect blend of eerie and horrific elements with a reluctantly developing friendship.
I grew it myself (Archive 81, art, SFW)
I don't know this canon, but this artwork is creepily delightful anyway.
Schrödinger’s House (Fringe, Olivia(s) + team, 3500 wds)
Excellent take on the creepier possibilities of Olivia's sensory deprivation/astral projection tank. An exciting adventure, eerie and very Olivia.
Negative Creation (Greek myth, Persephone, 1000 wds)
The waters of the river Lethe are polished and opaque: you can see everything that you’re leaving behind. A richly imagined, eerie and dark take on Persephone, what she's leaving behind, and what she wanted to keep but couldn't. I love that this is neither Hades/Persephone as a love story for the ages or Persephone as a victim, but something very plausibly and painfully in between.
