Watership Down readalong?

I was talking to someone about this book today and thinking about doing a reread or readalong or book discussion kind of thing. Anyone else up for that?

If so, what kind of discussion do you think would be fun? Just a single discussion post once people have had a chance to read it? Chapter by chapter might take too long, but the book is divided into sections, so those might be a nice way to break it down if we didn't do it all at once.

Ideas are welcome! What kind of book discussions have you seen or participated in lately that worked for you?

I'm trying to decide if I should try to read this with Guppy or if she's still too young for it. Hmm.

I'm pretty sure I was about her age when I read it for the first time, and I don't think there's anything in it that's more violent than the dragon books, at least based on the excerpts she's been reading to me, some of which are HOLY CRAP. XD You could warn her that some bad things happen to the rabbits and see if she bounces off the style or not; it is kind of dense going.

My regular in-person (well, on-Zoom now) book club is doing it in June, so I’ll be rereading it anyway and would be happy to talk about it in multiple places!

(There's a wild black rabbit living in the scrub on my drive home, and I call him El-rahrahrah and croon "Bright Eyes" at him. He probably thinks I'm batshit.)

I am pretty sure my paperback from the 1980s is one of the books I culled. But I could get an e-book. I just read a long MCU fanfiction story in which Watership Down plays a big part: https://archiveofourown.org/works/17666285

Oh, it's Punisher, too! I haven't read Punisher fic in a while. :D

I still haven't seen the miniseries. I don't like the character in the comics, but the actor they had for him is really excellent.

Yeah; in my case it was the Punisher TV series that made me fall for the character, which was really a surprise since I can't stand the comics version! He's really different in the show, and really well played.

I used to participate in "Mark Reads". He had a very enjoyable format. He only read books that were new to him. Often, books that most of his followers had read before, like the Harry Potter books. He wrote a reaction to each chapter and then everyone would react to him and each other. His posts were thoughtful and often hilarious, with overuse of the capslock key. Sometimes there were tangents that lots of us took up. Personal stories happened, politics happened.

I don't know if Mark's format would work with Watership Down, but it's the format I enjoyed the most of any reading group.

Thank you, this is helpful! I think chapter-by-chapter posts would be too much for me to handle on a regular basis, but hopefully breaking it into section posts will function similarly.
