Coding question

This isn't really a question about what the applicable code is, but how you'd recommend using it.

My [livejournal.com profile] gateverse_remix story uses a number of footnotes (it's written in a pseudo-academic style). Some of the footnotes are fairly long, and all of them can be disregarded in order to understand and enjoy the story (they're basically there for value-added joy for those of us who enjoy anthropological BS). For those of you who have written and/or read LJ entries that use footnotes, how did you do it? Have you tried different ways? What do you prefer?

The two ways I can think of to code them are to use separate LJ cut-links for each note, in which case they'll appear as separate cut-links outside the cut-text of the entry (which I don't want); or to use HTML anchor-links, which means I can't hard-code them until I know the exact URL of the final entry.

Can you think of a better way to do it? What would you suggest?

And, as a reader, is there a way of doing footnotes that you find least objectionable? If so, how?

Edit: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kyuuketsukirui, my HTML-idiocy is straightened out and I know how I'm doing my footnotes now (yay!), though I'd still be interested to hear if people have any further thoughts on footnotes. I realize that they can be kind of intrusive, and I'd like them to be a fun thing rather than an "OMG, what is she on NOW" kind of thing.

You don't have to know the URL.

<a href="#1">1</a> is the tag for your footnote number and <a name="1">footnote text</a> is your footnote text (replace 1 with other numbers for other footnotes, obvs).

That allows it to work on the page regardless of where the page is located. Works on your harddrive, on the website, etc. (That way they still work if someone downloads it and reads offline, or if you post it to multiple sites.)

Oh! Thank you very much! I thought that you had to hard-code the URL+anchor (it's been forever since I did anchors in HTML).

That's just perfect, and it will work beautifully for what I'm trying to do. Thanks again! *squishes you*
