Because I just can't help myself

Going along doing edits to our Big Bang story, every once in a while I come across a scene that makes me giggle helplessly, in a "what were we on when we wrote this story?!" kind of way. Like this:

"So..." Rodney was caught between righteous indignation at having his privacy invaded, and respect, because he'd had a lifetime to learn his way around the Atlantis mainframe and still Zelenka had found him out. "Did you, uh. Read them?"

"I tried." Zelenka pushed up his glasses, and smiled ruefully. "I cannot understand half of the math."

"It's whale math," Rodney said loftily. "Of course you can't."

Zelenka stared at him for a moment. "You know, in the labs, Rodney, you are widely considered brilliant, but quite mad."

"All the greatest mathematicians and scientific theoreticians were considered mad in their time. Nostradamus, Newton, Rasputin, Tesla ..."

"Rodney, most of them were mad."

"Which does not in any way disprove my point," Rodney snapped.

It makes more sense in context. I think.

whale math?

it really is 60,000 words of crack isn't it :-P

made me chuckle.

Closer to 90,000 words of crack. *sigh* I think the creeping influx of slash is the least of our issues with this story, really ...

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Whale math! *snorfle* Rodney's comparing himself to Nostradamus and Rasputin! That alone is worth the price of admission.

This story is ... special. *g*

[identity profile] mcalex22.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, whale math... trust Rodney to come up with something new...!

This is the slightly slash story or unintentional pre-slash one? I'm trying to guess the slash pairing. [livejournal.com profile] derry667 suggested to me that it's a Ronon/Rodney one and I'm thinking it would definitely have Rodney in it as one half but it's kinda fun guessing who he'll be pre-slashed with...! :D

(comment edited due to numerous grammatical errors!)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
No "pre" about it, it's definitely slash, and believe me, we're as surprised as anyone else. *g*

Do you want to know the pairing? Or be surprised? Trust me, it's not much of a surprise...

[identity profile] mcalex22.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to be surprised because that will be fun! Oh dear, not that you've said it's not much of a surprise, I'm thinking John-Rodney because it always seems like an obvious choice and you do friend ship them a lot. But I'd also like Rodney-Ronon because that would crack me up and I can look at it and smile!

I'll wait patiently :)

LOL! That's too funny, and I too have a strange sense of humor.

If you have a strange sense of humor, you should love this. It's definitely a prerequisite. :D

Whale math! ♥

I love that bit. Although, yes, it's the kind of loving I do while giggling helplessly.

Wait until you see what we've done to Radek in the AU, oh my god. He's definitely got a very memorable role ...

Ha! It does sound ... alarmingly plausible, doesn't it? :D

I rather like the idea that Rodney's lab staff think of him as brilliant but mad...

LOL! Oh, sounds interesting, only I don't normally read slash (or het). How slashy is it? Like just kissing/hugging or more? I might make an exception for this one, unless it's really slashy.
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Just kissing - nothing more than that. It was conceived as team gen and the slash wouldn't leave us alone until finally we gave in and had it happen that way. *g* But it's still very lightly rated and mostly team-focused.

RASPUTIN?!?!?

Yeah, what were you guys on??? Seriously.

And generally gen reader or no, I don't think there's a chance in hell that I won't read this.

Have you got a title for it yet?
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Our working title is "A Clear and Different Light". It makes more sense when you realize that the whole thing is basically a big fairy tale.

It's primarily gen. Which, I realize, is exactly what we complain about when other people say that about THEIR slash. Hey, I never claimed to be consistent! :D But we conceived it as team gen, so despite a slash subplot, the story is heavily focused on the team (with large roles for Ronon, Teyla and several of the supporting cast), and if you can deal with a bit of boykissing, I don't think it'll be too weird.

[identity profile] derry667.livejournal.com 2008-07-10 07:28 am (UTC)(link)

LOL! I think what tends to annoy me about those fics is that the slash seems to be gratuitously "tacked on" (as one person once admitted to doing just to get more readers).

If, in the case of this story, the slash really did "write itself in", well then it would probably flow as a natural part of the story and wouldn't jar when I read it.

I don't object to slash. It just seems that 99% of the time slashfics seemed to aimed at "fulfilling needs" that I just don't have. So to me, reading it is, at best, pointless or, at worst, annoying.

O-kay. Given the authors involved (and their strange obsession with whales) theis sounds more and more interesting...

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-07-10 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean about the tacked-on feeling -- also about the "fulfilling needs". I'm not a person who reads slash as a general rule; in most of my fandoms, I'll take slash if nothing else is available, but I don't seek it out. SGA is really unusual for me, in that I actively look for it. I'm just not a person who enjoys romance in general -- only in certain cases -- but I think we've talked about this :D. I do hope that the slash in this story works for you, in context ... I guess we'll both find out in a few weeks!

Love the scene. Looking forward to it. : )
