Holiday wishlist stocking thing

[personal profile] frith_in_thorns had the BEST idea.

So it's starting to look like fandom_stocking is probably not running this year, and in-a-peartree signups are closed. But what if we did an informal kind of thing in our own journals - sort of like a combination of the older-style LJ holiday wishlist posts and f_s?

1. Post a wishlist in your own journal.

2. Turn comment notifications off.

3. DON'T PEEK UNTIL THE 25th. (Obviously this is on the honor system.)

Somebody help me kick the tires of this idea and figure out if it would work? It wouldn't have the infrastructure of f_s, of course, and most critically, no one is guaranteed anything. But you could ask for any sort of thing - not just fandom stuff, but also holiday cards or things from an Amazon wishlist or the like.

There is already a [community profile] holiday_wishes comm that's pretty active, so I don't know if this would be too similar to that. (The main difference is the comment-hiding thing to be surprised, and doing it in your own journal the way LJ holiday wishlists used to be.)

Thoughts?

ETA: I got buried under a tidal wave of family crisis today, sorry. >___> I'll try to reply to comments properly tomorrow!

I like the idea! If others are doing it, I'll join in! :)

Feeling sad about Fandom Stocking, but I can only imagine the difficulty in running it now it's got so big, so totally understand why it might not be happening.

I just wish it had been passed on to someone else to mod, if the mod wasn't feeling it. I hear people have offered to take it over but alas.

Glad to do something for all the people missing Fandom Stocking (like me)!

Would there be some sort of coordinating post to help people find wishlists for people they aren't friends with, or would this strictly be for gifting people with whom you have established relationships?

(I have to say, the one thing I most want for the holidays is a new friending meme.)

Ooh, I was thinking it was about time for one, actually! I might work on some graphics and see what I can do about that. The last one I ran was fun!

I think it's a great idea.

This sounds like a great idea!! (If you can tell me how to turn off comment notifications on a post) I’m sad fandom stocking isn’t running because I keep forgetting to sign up for it

I think it's a great idea! I wouldn't put up a post but I'd want to cruise around and give gifts, so some kind of central post where people could link their letters would be awesome.

Sad about fandom-stocking, but I think it kind of outgrew its structure and wasn't being much fun for [personal profile] medie any more.

I also agree about some kind of central letter linking post!

I'm interested! Although if people are sending real things, like holiday cards, then those obviously can't be ~unveiled on the 25th, right? You'd just get them the ordinary way?

I was already considering doing a holiday-wishes type wishlist on my journal, but I wasn't going to do it through the comm, because I feel weird asking strangers for stuff.

I am so sad to hear about fandom_stocking! I was just recommending it to a young friend, too.

Would we have, like, a banner to to show we were doing it? (I ran to look at icy effects in Photoshop ... my home Photoshop is a limping old version, sadly.)

And I second [personal profile] ambyr's question about coordinating things. I mean, like if you knew someone who was new to CJC and wanted a ficlet, f'rinstance?

How does one set a post to no notifications?

I love the idea but...I can't see myself turning comment notifs off for a month :( I don't have the self control not to peek either XD

Anyway, apparently Stony fandom is doing something too (it's FS+"one request must be comics stony") https://yougavemeastocking.dreamwidth.org/ so I'm gonna play that I think!

But I would love it if people posted their wishlists!

Same! I'd like to participate but I'd be getting notifications as usual. (I could probably avoid reading them if that counts?)

How do you do that?? I've only ever used notifications for individual posts in other's journals - I have them on for all of mine by default and haven't seen this option you must be using?

Oh! I didn't realize that. Good to know. I might still peek but at least this seems controllable.

It seems like there's a bunch of mini-stockings-exchanges popping up all over the place XD (I have no spoons.)

Could we post wishlists to a community? That would make them findable for everyone. And honestly, I'd feel awkward posting a wishlist to my journal, like I was asking my whole flist to give me stuff ...

I hope your family crisis resolved okay!
I'd be up for sharing a wishlist and trying to fill others' wishes. some kind of central coordination post would be cool for people to find wishlists of others they aren't already friends with. (I think I'd be iffy about making my own wishlist public to complete strangers because I'm weird that way, but I'd be glad to try filling wishes for anyone I could including complete strangers.)
