Since I'm not sure if fandom_stocking will happen this year, I signed up last-minute-ishly for

in_a_peartree, which operates similarly. Signups close very soon - actually just about 3 hours from me writing this post (at 5 a.m. US Pacific time) so that's not much time to sign up, but I wanted to point it out, and I hope they're successful and run again next year! I was on the fence too! I wish they had held the nominations open thru the end of the day, maybe.

It has a very...uh...moderated feel. I hope it goes well! Maybe I'll participate next year.

Since it's the first year, it's probably good that they're staying small. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

It's really a shame f_s doesn't seem to be running this year! It's always been one of my favourite things. And I totally missed the one you mention, but I'm not sure I'd have had time to investigate a new thing anyway. *sighs*

Like I was saying to someone else in comments elsewhere, I think f_s is big enough that it seems likely there will be a comparable event next year if it's no longer running; enough people like it that someone is bound to pick it up. There just really isn't enough time this year to pull something together.

The f_s timeline slipped later and later over the years, so I held out hope too, and I suppose it's not strictly impossible, but I'd be really surprised if it still happened this year. It's definitely too late now to make an alternative, yeah.

But it would be awesome if something could happen next year! I love the format a lot; it's perfect for me.

Aww, man. I didn't know fandom_stocking was in doubt, and I hadn't heard of peartree at all. I'll have to check it out next year if f_s doesn't happen.

There hasn't been an official announcement about f_s one way or the other, so it's all pure speculation and it still might run, but I'm seeing increasing speculation around my flist that it's unlikely since it's getting so late in the season.

It does usually run later, so I'm not worried yet.

We could always start a tradition where one just... posts a stocking on your journal, turns off comment notifs, and asks people to post in it while you try REALLY HARD not to look until Christmas? :D

I was talking to Sheron yesterday about running some kind of mini-fest of our own, but anything we could do would be either too tiny to get much interest, or way too much work. But this would be perfect! Basically it could work like those holiday wishlist posts that people used to do, except you would be honorbound not to peek. (And of course no one's gonna know if you do, though it would be more fun if you don't, I think.)

And it would mean that people wouldn't be bound by f_s type rules and could ask for basically anything; you could also ask people to send you holiday cards, for example, or link to Amazon wishlists if you wanted to. Basically a combination of those old holiday wishlists + f_s.

SUCH GOOD IDEA. SHOULD DO! :D I could make a post about it?

Yes yes do it!! I will do it too!

I remembered as I started typing up a post that there is already a holiday-wishlist comm that's pretty active:

holiday_wishes. The main difference here is the "not peeking" aspect, to approximate f_s. So I'm not really sure how to account for that, honestly! It would be possible to just post wishlists over there as well. But I prefer the idea of doing it in our own journals; it feels cozier.
