*floats idea*

I am thinking about starting a community to rec free online (original) fiction -- either written fiction or webcomics. The only stipulation would be that it must be freely available online.

I was thinking about this because I've been reading quite a bit of fiction online, as well as seeking out webcomics that are of the ongoing-story variety rather than the gag-strip variety (though, I haven't been reading much comics at all lately, so less of that in the last year or so). Fandom is very well organized as far as sorting out the wheat from the chaff -- recs sites, individual recs in journals, well-known vs. unknown authors and so forth. But it's really difficult to find good online fiction without knowing where to go. I would love to have something similar for original fiction to what we already have for fanfic of nearly every sort.

I was also thinking that it might be a place to post fiction, if people are so inclined -- one part recs community, one part online anthology of sorts. Kind of like the more general fandom comms in the smaller fandoms, where they host fic as well as providing a recs service.

Thoughts?

(P.S. Thanks to those who replied in my plot poll, below. Surprisingly, it actually does help!)

That sounds cool. I feel posting online a good form of advertising for authors hoping to one day become published (or who already are published), and the more places to post original fic the better. I'd also like to check out web stories and comics.

There's just so *much* out there online, but finding it and sorting through it is very time-consuming! Even a lot of published authors are becoming aware of how useful it is to offer free samples or whole books online.

That sounds cool. I've got at least two recs I could make right off the bat, and at least a couple others if I dig around a bit.

Nice! I'd hope there would be interest in such a thing, and I can probably keep going for awhile just on things I've read lately.

Sounds like a brilliant idea to me. I've been thinking more and more lately that all the truly groundbreaking fiction of our era is going to happen on the internet, kind of like a natural follow on from all the beautiful experimental fanfiction that we're getting from the most talented of us. So, yeah, I think this would be awesome.

Sounds good - I might even have a rec or two! Not that I read a lot of online original fic, but maybe I should start reading more or it - a rec site would be very helpful.

I think this is an awesome idea. I've been having a heck of a time finding good original fiction online... I must not be looking in the right places or something. So yeah, recs would be very useful to me. I can think of a couple off the top of my head that I would definitely rec; if we get enough people interested we could wind up with quite the list.
