Fairbanks at night

I took a photo of Fairbanks from the plane when I was flying home a couple of days ago (this is about 11:30 p.m.) to demonstrate what night in early May is like; the photo is about accurate for the amount of light at night right now. Soon we'll stop having night at all, but it's still making halfhearted attempts at it.

Oof. On the one hand, the light is gorgeous. On the other, thank god for blackout curtains...

Blackout curtains are a GODSEND, especially for someone like me who is strongly affected by daylight, to the point of not really being able to sleep at all in a light room.

It's interesting that I'm very fine sleeping in a relatively light room (i.e. I can sleep in the high summer with sun beaming through the window; though obviously not at my face). But it's like it's a different quality of sleep than the one in the dark. i.e. sometimes when I want to nap lightly I will purposefully leave light on in the room (turned away from my eyes) so that I never quite get to the deep sleep.

And there are times when I'm out in the country where it's completely dark and it's actually disconcerting because living in a large city there's always some light from neighbouring buildings and street lamps.

It's a nifty thing to see! It does mess with your circadian rhythms a lot, though.

YUP. Blackout curtains are a must for me, since I can't really sleep at all when it's light.

Thank you! It was really interesting flying north at night, taking off from Seattle in the dark and then having it get lighter and lighter the closer we got to the pole.
