BigBang progress

I ... kinda feel guilty about posting this, but ...

Current progress on [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang fic:

It is probably worth noting that [livejournal.com profile] naye is in Sweden while I'm in Alaska, two time zones which are just about 180 degrees reversed, so we can, theoretically, write 24 hours a day.

In theory.

I'm sure this is going to slow down massively in the next few weeks, because I have freelance work that's due, and then [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon starts on March 31st (that is, that's the date when I start posting fics that have been submitted to me).

By the way, for anyone who's reading this who is writing for genficathon, if you can actually include your LJ/html coding in your final document (italics, etc), it makes my life SO MUCH EASIER. If you don't know how to do it, no big deal, I can code it myself (and on most of them, I have been). But if you do know how, and have the time to do it, please do! All I'll have to do is an easy copy and paste in that case, as opposed to an HTML export from my word processor and then a bunch of find-and-replace on weird characters in the file.

Do you also need the unicode special character substitutions - &emdash; and so forth? And if so, what character set would you be using?

[identity profile] blade-girl.livejournal.com 2008-03-19 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, jeez, never mind. I just remembered this is being posted to an LJ comm and not to an outside website.

Move along. Nothing to see here.

Awww, I just got halfway through an answer! *g*

Because I'm on a Mac, though, anything in your file that isn't ASCII-128 (including smart quotes and the like) *might* have to be find-and-replaced because there's no telling what's going to happen to it when the file gets translated between platforms. I accept this as the price of having a Mac, though. *g*

Where'd you get the counter? Mine would be at, um 0 words.

I got it from writertopia.com (http://www.writertopia.com/toolbox/meters).

I'm sort of alarmed at how fast this is going. It's starting to worry me that the thing is going to turn out to be 150,000 words long or something.

You forgot to mention that it also means that our brainstorming sessions almost always fall late at night for one of us! (And then people can make their own guesses about what that means for the story... *g*)

Seeing the little "41%" up there made me LAUGH. I hadn't actually realized it was that much, percentage-wise!

And then I spazzed a little, because HAHAHA the counter only measures up to the minimum challenge goal, and has no idea how much is actually left of the story...! Eep.

XD I know! I'm terribly afraid that we're going to end up with a horribly, horribly long story! I mean, we're almost halfway done! And this has all been mere setup for the actual plot ...

wow- look at that progress!!! Guess having a co-writer just is flowing the juices! And you know... you don't have to 'stop' at 40,000 :) One of my favs from last year (that took me ALL NIGHT to read) was 98,000+ heh. I can see you dying from here.

So, curious minds want to know - what prompt inspired you both? Was it a mutual decision or just a lot of hashing out/trying to work with something that you both wanted?

*g* It does look terribly likely that it's going to end up much longer than 40,000 words!

"Canon characters crossing into an AU" was what we jumped on. We tossed around some ideas for AUs and then almost immediately hit on one that we both liked ... and we were off and running!

and we were off and running

... a marathon, apparently. While juggling geese. XD

You should post that request to the [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon community. People could just test the code on their own LJs and email it to you complete. (If I didn't ask for that in purimgifts I'd have killed myself by now...)

Oh, that's a good idea. I hate to keep posting over there and telling people to do different things, though ... I don't want to be a pest! (But, wow. Having the coding already in there is SUCH a help!)

And, yay! I see [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts is up and running! *squees for new fic*

[identity profile] beadattitude.livejournal.com 2008-03-19 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
I really, really should go back to sleep, because I read that as sga_gentrification and just couldn't for the LIFE of me figure out how you were going to do that.

*heeee* Yeah, I ... can't imagine how one would do that, either! :D

It just happened, I swear! If it's any consolation, I don't think we're anywhere near half done with this sucker. It's going to be LONG.

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha... yeah, I was just a touch bitter yesterday because my brain couldn't wrap around a single thought process to even pick a prompt and here you guys were like a quarter of the way done ;)

I'm better now though.

How's the word count going now?

Er. We're up to about 20,000 words and still haven't hit what I think of as "the start of the plot" (the original idea that we had for what was going to happen).

I know it wouldn't be happening nearly as fast if we weren't collaborating. It's not just having two people writing; it's having someone who's equally interested to bounce ideas off of.

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That's still pretty good, as it averages out to like 10,000 a piece. (Not jealous, not jealous, not jealous). Sounds like you guys are having a blast, which is the whole point I think.

The closest I've ever had to collaborative writing was a little e-mail roleplay one of my friends and I did, where we basically just split the characters involved. I think for the real, in-depth kind of scene/story writing you probably have to be on an even keel, at least in your interpretations of the characters/events though, right?

(And pretty Ronon icon, by the by. I don't think I've seen that one before today).

[identity profile] maxinemayer.livejournal.com 2008-03-19 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so happy for you guys! I know there's lots more to write on big bang but to have got this far, so early, is marvelous! You should be very proud!
love, max
