Meme answers: Music

[livejournal.com profile] naye asked:

Music! Don't know much about what kind of music you like and such, and I'm particularly curious about what music you listen to when you write - if you listen to anything at all.

Oh yes! I love having music playing in the background for pretty much everything I do. I'd generally call my musical tastes fairly mainstream -- pop/rock, 80s hits, folk music from different countries, classic rock, that kind of thing. I'm willing to try anything (and, in fact, I find most of my new music via songvids/AMVs, fanmixes and random surfing on Youtube) but the songs I listen to over and over are generally happy-making songs that I can halfway tune out in the background while I write or draw or do housework. Hmm ... *sorts iTunes library* looks like my current top 40 most-played songs are: (from most to least played)

Soak Up the Sun - Sheryl Crow
Life In a Northern Town - The Dream Academy
Affirmation - Savage Garden
Joey - Concrete Blonde
To Be Happy - Sara Evans
Anticipation - Carly Simon
Bye Bye Pride - The Go-Betweens
Every Little Kiss - Sara Evans
Fire Escape - Fastball
Movin' On - Good Charlotte
Sister Golden Hair - America
If I Ever Leave This World Alive - Flogging Molly
Countdown - Lindsey Buckingham
These Are Days - 10,000 Maniacs
The Scientist - Coldplay
If It Makes You Happy - Sheryl Crow
Hammer to Fall - Queen
What About Everything? - Carbon Leaf
Gypsy - Fleetwood Mac
Say it with Love - The Moody Blues
Take It Outside - Barenaked Ladies
Send Me No Wine - The Moody Blues
I Am a Rock - Paul Simon
Nothing I Can Do About It Now - Willie Nelson
Wherever You Will Go - The Calling
Dream To Me - Cranberries
Tuesday's Dead - Cat Stevens
Back on the Chain Gang - Pretenders
Never Going Back Again - Fleetwood Mac
Think About It - Stevie Nicks
Good Intentions - Toad The Wet Sprocket
Second Hand News - Fleetwood Mac
It's the Life - Grant Lee Buffalo
2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten - Lucinda Williams
100 Years - Five for Fighting
Sundown - Gordon Lightfoot
Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles
There She Goes - Sixpence None The Richer
Long May You Run - Neil Young with Stephen Stills
Least Complicated - Indigo Girls

My favorite albums are usually played off the CD rather than from iTunes, though -- I never bothered ripping them since I like to listen to them as a whole rather than piecemeal anyway. I'm in the process of ripping my CDs now that I have a bigger hard drive, but it's going slowly. Current "most listened" CDs (a.k.a. the ones I don't bother putting away in the rack because I'm always playing them) are:
Nancy Griffith - Other Voices, Other Rooms
Paul Simon - Graceland
Jimmy Buffett - A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean
The Beatles - 1 (a.k.a. the best-of album with the red cover)
Mary Chapin Carpenter - Come On Come On

Last albums purchased:
The Eagles - Long Road out of Eden
Miriam Makeba - Mama Africa: The Very Best of Miriam Makeba

Mary Chapin Carpenter - Come On Come On

Yay! Another MCC fan :) COCO is good, but I adore "Stones in the Road". Now, where did I put that CD...? *wanders off to find*

Oh, I love her; I've loved her since I was a teen. One of the things I like most about her -- aside from, obviously, the music -- is her straightforward and unglamorous stage persona; she's a very attractive woman, but not someone who uses that to sell her music.

Video Killed The Radio Star - I love that song, even the remake that was done for The Wedding Singer. My favourites are Aussie rocker Jimmy Barnes and 80's stuff. One of the young guys at work told us last week that there was NO good music before 1995. We all laughed at the child!

ahahahahaha. Children. :D

I really do love that song! You might have seen this, but check it out live! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laZw3Y3JCJ8) (And recent! Apparently those are the original backup singers that sang on the 1980s version.)

I hadn't seen that, thanks heaps:)

Hee! The list seems to consists of songs that make me go "Hmm, never heard that one?" and "Oh, that one, I love that one!". And always having music on in the background - yes! I do that too. I don't really get a chance to listen much to albums - being abroad for a year and traveling much, I've got my CD collection ripped, and most of the time it's all in a jumble in my all-inclusive play list. Though I do tend to make play lists based on moods and specific bands and sometimes albums, too.

Oh, what are some of your "never heard it ..." songs? Are there any that you would like to hear? Because, hmm, I do have bandwidth, and since you've pointed me to some new artists (Carbon Leaf and Johnny Clegg come to mind) and even made a soundtrack for me (!!!), I would love to return the favor.

Oooh, music! Actually, if you count the songs I've only heard and don't own, I think most of your list except Carbon Leaf and Barenaked Ladies would be music I don't have right now. So~. Anything you particularly feel like sharing would be great! Thank you. ♥ (I still listen to that soundtrack! It's such a great mix for traveling, or even walking. And, of course, the associations always make me feel all happy.)
