For some reason I had the same reaction - I wasn't that enthused about the first one, and then I absolutely loved the second one ... and ended up liking the first one much better because of it! It's interesting how we click, or don't click, with different movies, at different times. (I think I just wasn't in the right headspace for the first movie when it came out. Perhaps M was the same.)
