Fic rec request

[livejournal.com profile] sheron just watched CA: Civil War and is looking for Tony-focused fics (Steve & Tony, preferably) that deal with the fallout from the movie and AREN'T terribly skewed towards one character or the other. (As the entire fandom tends to be post-CW, thus missing the point of the movie entirely.) She's okay with Steve/Tony if that's the only way to get the feels, but prefers gen friendship fic for these characters.

I am completely unhelpful since I haven't read anything in this fandom in over a year, but I offered to ask, since I know there are people hereabouts who are still in Avengers fandom. Anyone seen any good post-CW fic around?

All my CW recs are from the last one, lol.

ETA: According to Cap/Iron Man chat, this is a good list (which helpfully links to nothing!)

Hope you enjoy it. I don't read a lot of MCU and am mostly Team!Didn'tLikeThatMovie (though I do enjoy the tat. I have a Choose Your Side cutting board.)

MCU CW recs, mostly Tony focused

...and sans bashing! Which I also dislike.

The lingering remainders: in which Tony Stark post CW runs into one of Peggy Carter's old mates who provides some perspective. No, not that one.

Wear your momentum: in which Pepper shows up post CW, and the story manages to be both entirely IC for both parties and yet amazingly unangsty.

Maybe not soon: ensemble collection of post CW scenes.

Readjust: Tony and Rhodey post CW. Fantastic portrait of their friendship.

Errata: or, five times that Tony Stark was wrong (and one time he thought he was right): what the title says.

Yay!! Thank you so much.

I also found Causality, Catastrophe, and Consequences which is sans bashing and hits a lot of my buttons.

Oh, heh, I often have a lot of private bookmarks for stuff, so here are some that don't appear on there yet. They're all angst-with-happy-ending types.

I can't remember very well but this one might have a bit of "Steve is Bad and He Should Feel Bad", but overall it's alright, and if you treat that as Tony's POV on the situation it works.

This fic: http://archiveofourown.org/works/7032892

Starts with Steve POV but overall has alternating Steve & Tony POVs; tagged Steve/Tony in addition to Steve & Tony, but let's say that falls closer to what used to be called pre-slash. I don't remember the specifics of what happens in the fic, read it a while ago, but I loved it, and post CW I didn't like many fics that were too one-sided.

I actually have a bunch of post CW recs, though they're mostly not Tony-focused, though you can bet Tony fic was what I craved most after watching the movie. I still haven't read the hashing-out-issues-reconciliation 100k epic that I crave exists somewhere.

But for shorter fics, I would rec L'esprit L'escalier by [personal profile] thedeadparrot which is 7k of Tony/Rhodey post-movie, and rocks fall, everyone dies which is a short Pepper POV that - well, that I wish there was more of, and that I really enjoyed.

Other than those, and the Steve/Tony fic recced above, my favorite post CW fics have been either Steve/Bucky or Sam/Bucky, none of them glorifying Steve's "side" of the divide. If you are open, I would love to make a case for them, because god they are SO GOOD (and the one of them that does have Tony in it has a good Tony.)

Absolutely! Rec away! I fall more on the side of Sam/Bucky, these days (Tony/Bucky is a NOTP), but I really enjoy Steve/Bucky too if done correctly. I'd love to read the tag for the movie from their side. If it has good Tony ...all the better, because I still crave Tony-fic :D

Okay, awesome, so here goes:

fall in the winter, bloom in the spring by [archiveofourown.org profile] coffeeinallcaps - 20k of Sam/Bucky that takes place after the post-credits scene, after Bucky is taken out of cryo and they're still in Wakanda. Beautiful, wistful, has a positive portrayal of Tony (without, to my recollection, really dealing with their argument) though he's not the focus of the story.

Einherjar by [archiveofourown.org profile] thecommodore_squid - 70k of post-movie fic that includes a lot of Steve fallout (mainly depression), the detailed process of Bucky's deprogramming, Wakanda Avengers team dynamics, and dynamics between the Wakanda team and Tony's team. It has a Steve/Bucky endgame which I enjoyed despite an epiphany/penny dropping moment that felt unnecessary, and overall this is a little old school but was the first long post CW fic I read that was just satisfying in its interactions. Regarding one-sidedness, the fic worked for me, being a fic that is definitely rooting for Steve in that he's the main POV character for 70k and, you know, ultimately ships him and Bucky, and at the same time being a very close POV where Steve feels really bad about what happened (compounded by depression etc), so it's not like the fic is saying Steve Was Right. When it finally comes around to confronting him with Tony, there are no shortcuts to the road they all have to take. But it's a process, and they try.

the future unfolding, infinite by [archiveofourown.org profile] notcaycepollard - 39k of Sam/Bucky that turns into Steve/Sam/Bucky (it's two stories, the second is where it turns into OT3), and ugh my heart. I just finished this one today, so I'm still all FEELINGS about it. I've been slowly going over all of this author's stuff and enjoying so much of it, and this isn't their only post-CW story. This one doesn't deal with the ideology of the movie of the fallout of the rift between the Avengers; it branches of from canon where Bucky isn't put into cryo and instead he and Sam hole up in a safehouse in some cabin somewhere while (off-camera) Steve tries to work out the bureaucracy of their fugitive status, and they just work on themselves and end up taking care of each other and it's so, so wonderful. Like, Sam Wilson, doing good and deserving good things and getting them.

And okay. Now we come to Fire, Ashes, Dreams by [archiveofourown.org profile] sebastianL, a 200k series of two parts - the perfectly named Burn the World and The Strong Man.

It's hard to put this rec into words - I read this fic and couldn't shake it off for days. It's Steve/Bucky, but it's an epic, plotty character study more than anything, the kind where you can call it either slash or gen, however you prefer. When I finished it I was like, shit, this is a masterpiece and should be a fandom classic, like, yesterday. But its optics are bad: it has a bad summary. It's written in first person POV. It's 47 chapters that make up 200k words, that were posted over the course of six weeks, less than two months after the movie came out. Each of these elements separately are a badfic warning sign for a lot of people, let alone combined - when I was looking for post CW fic, I scrolled past it multiple times, nope-ing away just from a cursory glance, and I wouldn't have read it if a friend hadn't recced it to me. But I am so glad I did.

This story is about Bucky Barnes, and who he is, and how much the life of Captain America is worth. It's about Barnes and Sam and Steve on a road trip journey, on the run from a legit evil comicbook supervillain. To quote the author's note, This really isn't a feels fic, but it's not entirely action either. It's violent as hell, but it's also about a man trying to reclaim his identity in the midst of seemingly never ending chaos. Almost everyone makes really terrible decisions, innocent people are murdered, and nobody's forgiven for past misdeeds.

The first part is 1st person Bucky POV, and the second is Steve 1st person, and even if you're not usually into that, give it a shot. (By the way, friends of mine who read it didn't all agree with, in particular, Steve's characterization, but all thought it was worth the read.)

Basically this fic is feelings + a punch in the gut. If you read it, I hope you enjoy :-)
