Oh, that's just not right.

70 below zero? Somebody remind me why I moved back to this state?

Random community rec, which I don't think I've mentioned here before: [livejournal.com profile] sga_episodefic -- it's a recs community for episode tags. There's lots of fic to browse through, and you can also rec or self-pimp.

Luckily, that's at a town east of here, and it couldn't possibly drop THAT far tonight ... 40 to 50 below is what the weather said. Which, yeah, still not much fun, but do-able.

BUT STILL. I worry. ^^;;

Mostly because I can't even IMAGINE what that kind of cold feels like, and living in it? That's just surreal, to me. Then again, I've met a lot of people who thought the idea of living somewhere with six months of wintery type weather and less than six hours of sunlight a day was completely crazy, so I guess I'm not one to talk.

[identity profile] jaekayelle.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Is that without windchill? Yikes! With or without, that's freakishly cold. We got down to minus 51C the other day with the wind. brrr!

Stay warm! And thanks for the heads up on the recs community. :)

Yeah, that's without wind chill! But luckily we don't get much wind here.

*laughs* It's such a strange and diverse world, isn't it? And a few years ago, I was in Florida at just about this time of year and it was 55 degrees, too cold to go swimming!

[identity profile] ditraveler.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
well not good for swimming for sure lol.
I have never been in Alaska,,,thats where you are right?
I always wanted to go, one day I guess, I actually have never seen snow i my life, how sad is that!

[identity profile] ditraveler.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
the cold reminds me of the first fic I ever read, one of yours by the way, "the killing frost"
Now that was miserably cold.

*grin* Thanks!

I must admit I was thinking of certain experiences of mine when I wrote that story! My sister emailed me to inform me that Rodney shouldn't have been able to survive in those temperatures after getting wet, though! *heh* I figured it's fanfic and a little artistic license is okay. :D

That is crazy! 70 below! How does one not freeze to death?

[identity profile] parisindy.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
where are you in alaska? hehe i feel your pain we had -60 last week
ext_1981: (SGA-Game-John-look)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Fairbanks. The -70 is actually in Tok, which is a bit west of us.

Where are you?

[identity profile] parisindy.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
i'm central Canada (Saskatchewan) we don't get quite as cold... close but not that bad... its warmed up this week but last it sucked

how long is it suppose to last where you are ?

we had -60 for about 4 days i think then it warmed up to -30

we get these cold snaps every year

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'd heard that central Canada was getting a major cold snap right now! Ours is supposed to last all week and into the start of the next one.

Weather patterns seem to have changed a little. When I was in college, it would ALWAYS be -50 for at least 2 weeks in January. The last couple of years, we get these deep cold snaps in February. I'm not sure why.

There's this weird phenomenon with cold where the amount of difference in it grows less severe as you go down. For example, the difference between 50 degrees and 0 degrees is WAY more than the (subjective) difference between 0 and -50. It's bad, but not as bad as you might think.

[identity profile] sgatazmy.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I used to live where it was 15 below and I remember after 0 it was all the same. But -70? Wow. I'll take your word that it's not as bad as I think because it makes me so cold just thinking about it!!! :)
ext_1981: (Whaleverse-Rodney working)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly! There *is* a difference, but it's just not as much as you'd think. Probably the biggest difference is that the laws of physics work a little differently when it's that cold. Oil freezes, for example, which means that cars often break. If you throw a pan of hot water in the air, it'll instantly convert to steam! We used to have fun with this when I was in college. Though I knew another guy in college who got disciplined because he threw a water balloon at a girl out the window of a 7th story dorm room and it froze before it hit her ...

[identity profile] flingslass.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm complaining about the 18 degrees celcius here. *facepalm*

Oh, that's just not right.

[identity profile] maxinemayer.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Those kinds of temperatures you're remarking on so casually are just crazy-sounding to me! I freeze when it's below 20 degrees here in NYC! It hit 9 degrees one day last winter and I thought the world was coming to an end! I don't know how you guys take the cold!

Hope it warms up soon and that you survive the "cold snap!"
Love, max

It got down to 7F here and then the next week was 70F then tornadoes...

Personally? I really miss that wimpy west coast weather :(
