A request

So the Season 5 spoilers are out and about, lurking to trap the unwary. *g* I know that I'm bound to be spoiled eventually, one way or another, but if at all possible, I would REALLY like to avoid finding out anything about season 5 until we finish the current season.

So, please, please, if you know anything at all about season 5, DON'T mention it in comments to my posts, okay? Even with spoiler space, because it's all too easy to skim past that, and even in terms of careful hinting ("Ooh, you're gonna love what they do with that character next season"). I would really rather not know, at least not until the last few episodes have aired. So far, everyone has been very good about spoiler-cutting everything in their own journals, and as a spoilerphobe, I really, really do appreciate that. Thank you!

You should probably avoid Gateworld (or at least the front page) for a few days. They've got a huge honking one on the front page right now.

On the bright/not-so-bright side, you've only got a few weeks in which to dodge spoilers :D

(And see, wasn't that wonderfully restrained?)

Evil, lurking spoilers! I've heard they like to drag you away and beat you up in dark alleys...!

I'm hoping I'll be able to last the rest of the season without getting spoiled for anything except what I already know - Joe M's blog is definitely off my reading list now. Sigh. It's fun to read it, but... yes, if spoilers are like dark alleys, his blog is Gotham City. (Which would make him... the Anit-Batman?) It was fine during downtime, but a couple of days ago I got blindsided by something from an episode I previously knew nothing about, and I'm still annoyed with myself for not seeing that coming! (I've been trying to forget it, but trying to forget a spoiler is even worse than trying not to think about elephants. At least the elephants don't taunt you.)

I think I need more icons like this one. *g* (And if you would like one too, I'd be more than happy to make a batch to share!)

I like your icon! Though I'm still trying to keep under the paid-account default, so I'd better not be adding any new ones anytime soon. (Though, your icons are beautiful, so sharp and clear! Do you have any tips on getting the pictures to come out crisp at that small size? Mine always get kind of dull and blurry, no matter how I try to sharpen them up.)

Thank you! ^_^ Ahh, yes, the limit - I got paid icon time for my birthday, so I'm spoiled!

Some icons work better than others, and I wish I knew exactly what to do to get the best result each time, but it's a lot of guesswork on my part. Still - the basics for me is fiddling with the levels (...I can't recall if they're called levels in Photoshop!), and doing a little bit of gentle sharpening. Sometimes Unsharp Mask works better than regular Sharpen, and sometimes it looks horrible. Like I said - I really don't know why it works one way or the other. I just fiddle around until I get something I like!

And then, what I've done with icons like this one (Ronon comforting Teyla) is to add a layer with a gradient. Just a flare-type gradient, mostly translucent. Using Overlay on the gradient layer really brings out the highlights of the image without blocking any of the details. (Actually, Overlay is just what I'm using for this one. Sometimes one of the other blending modes will look nicer.)

I've tended to use either a light, cold blue, or a warm apricot or pink, and it does wonders for the final look! Some of my icons you can definitely tell there are gradients at work in, but others have taken me by surprise in how they made the whole image subtly better and sharper-looking, without taking over.

Of course, it could be something else altogether - I honestly don't know! Especially since your icons are perfectly lovely - I've told you how the "habit of saving each other's lives" was one of the things that convinced me go ahead and check the show out, right? ^_^

not spoilery, I promise

So last I heard Atlantis is actually a transformer and they learn it can turn into a giant dragon and fly through space using solar winds to steer. And the dragon gets hungry and eats Rodney who becomes the dragon's brain so season five is all about the adventures of a giant, sentient, snarky, dragon-city running around the galaxy and yelling at all the native scientists that they're doing things wrong.

Then John gets jealous and finds another Ancient city (guarded by three beautiful princess who all want to be his wife) and turns it into a griffin and there is a giant galactic battle with replicators and then they learn that all the different cities can come together into one giant MegaMagicalAnimal and they use it to stomp all the Wraith at once.

(and really, this is all RepliWeir's plan to distract everyone else so she and RepliCarter can take over the galaxy and join up with Teyla and Vala to be space pirate extraordinaires in the new spin-off show Stargate: ARRR Matey)

[I, um, haven't seen the spoilers and don't really care too, so if any of this ends up true, I'm gonna be really scared that Mallozzi has a chip in my head]

I think we should all write up really off-the-wall non-spoilers about what's going to happen in S5. That would be fun.

No, the real trick is seeing which ones you can perpetuate enough so some fan runs over to Mallozzi's blog and whines "OMG are you really doing X? I'm so not watching the show ever again if you do that??!!!eleventy!!! How could you think it was okay to do that to MY JOHN?!?!"

That's totally my marker for success.

Hee! Well, that shouldn't be too hard since they run whining when there's a leak that there's going to be a storyline where John get athlete's foot and Rodney makes fun of the itch. Oh, noes! John is too manly to get funky feet. Undo it! Undo it! LOL

Oh, man, if they actually did the space pirates thing at the end, especially, I would be All About it (and Ronon would totally take one look and say "oh, cool" and abandon the fighting Ancient city MegaMagicAnimal of doom to go be a pirate with the girls. he's already got the hair)

I shall be good - I shall be good - I shall be good (repeat).

There, no spoilers - and like [livejournal.com profile] greyias says, stay away from Gateworld for a long while. Big spoiler with no spoiler cut or anything like that on the front page - not good.

[identity profile] alipeeps.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm leaning towards the spoiler-free side of the fence these days myself. Not that I'm running screaming and making the sign of the cross from any and all information but I am consciously avoiding episode discussion/speculation threads and not seeking out any info. I don't mind knowing a general idea of what an episode is about but no more than that really (this is quite a change for me as an admitted spoiler-whore). I felt, what with the leaks and everything and the amount of clips released in various forms, that I got kind of over-spoiled in the front half of the season and I've rather enjoyed knowing less about what is going on and taking the eps as they come. E.g. I've consciously avoided spoilers about a certain up-coming 2 parter and really the only thing I know about it is the well-publicised guest star.

I'm thinking seriously about going spoiler-free for Season 5 - again, not full-on "OMGICAN'TGOONLINEFORSIXMONTHSFORFEAROFBEINGSPOILED!" spoiler-free but again just generally avoiding the obvious spoiler discussion areas and kind of metaphorically putting my fingers in my ears and going "la la la, I'm not listening" where necessary. :D

I definitely know that, for me, I enjoy the events in the show more when they're unexpected. I wish it was possible for the really big things, like character deaths, to be a surprise, but there's really no way to avoid those sorts of spoilers -- well, except for minor characters; Heightmeyer's death was a total shock.

But in general, the things in the show I've enjoyed most, that I had the biggest "squee!" or "OMG!" reactions to, were the things I didn't see coming. I think that for me and my own fannish experience, the sudden shock is necessary for the full emotional reaction. Even with character deaths, I'd still rather have the jaw-dropping "Oh wow, I can't believe they did that", rather than "Oh, so that's how he dies".

[identity profile] alipeeps.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
But in general, the things in the show I've enjoyed most, that I had the biggest "squee!" or "OMG!" reactions to, were the things I didn't see coming.

I feel kinda the same - even over just the smaller things. E.g. As I said, I've kinda stayed away from spoilers for the second half and even from the clips and stuff posted on JM's blog, all I knew about Harmony was Sheppard and McKay escorting a bratty teenage princess on a quest and the Genii get involved. Which is no more than MGM/SciFi would release as their episode summary. And watching the ep with a group of fans at P3, knowing nothing about the ep beyond the basic premise, was such great fun and we had so many OMG! and laugh out loud moments and had to rewind because we'd missed what came next. :)

We finished off season 3, but the end of that season was such a kick in the gut that we haven't gone back to it yet -- we've gotten sidetracked onto other, less depressing shows. :D I imagine that we'll return to it at some point, but it's such heavy going that I don't mind having a break.

That's my spoiler for ya. Now that I've got that out of my system...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
So you don't want to know that due to budget constraints, Gilbert Gotfriend was hired as the new commander of the base, and the excuse that Carter is gone that she was out on a balcony and a giant big bird swooped down and took her away? Or that Beckett's been kept as Thor's (who faked his death as well) love slave?

Oh darn, oops, spilled those beans... ;)

But seriously, stay away from all of Gateworld, Google news (if you Google for 'stargate'), the SciFi.com boards for SGA,and wow, I wish you the best in avoiding 'em.

Spoilers can make a show so much less fun. I gave in to these ones, but I completely see where you are coming from. I really wish that I hadn't known anything about season three before it aired. This season has been so much fun since I knew so little of what was going to happen.

I can respect that.

I have mixed feelings about it. Most the time I don't mind knowing vague plot or casting spoilers...that is we are going to bring in Character/Actor X for N number of episodes...particularly when it is actors or characters I like.

But I agree I love it when a show can completely surprise me...for example the end of "Be All My Sin Remembered"

[identity profile] with-apostrophe.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm on "I want to know who's going to be around" (and I do) but that's just about it.

Mallozzi's level of spoilers is perfect for me and I've been burned by Gateworld in the past, (so I try not to go there). But I have managed this time to see no plot spoilers, only casting ones. Seriously - I know nothing other than who's going to be showing up for work.

ITA with most of the stirling people who've commented above. I used to be a total spoiler-hunter when I watched Alias (because I was obsessed... Apparently there's medication for that now), and have been a mild spoiler-viewer with SGA, but I just wanted to make it to the end of S4 without being told anything about S5 - I reason that knowing the "where"s, "why"s and "who"s of S5 make the rest of the season predictable.

Unfortunately, the most innocuous of comments can be enough to spoil. Sometimes I think I should reconsider who's on my flist, as some people seem to have no sense of spoiler etiquette or decorum (present company excluded).

[identity profile] wildcat88.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
No spoilers from me! I'm with [livejournal.com profile] alipeeps on being semi-spoiler free. I don't want to know what's going in the eps. I enjoy them SO much more when I don't know what to expect. I do know a couple of things about S5, and I chose to know them since I didn't think I had any shot of avoiding them (especially since they are plastered across the GW main page and are the title of several threads). But I'm happily staying in the dark about everything else.
