That music meme

I've done this one before, but it's always fun, and I see it's making the rounds again in various forms.

Instructions:
Put your music playlist on shuffle or random. Take the first twenty [or fifteen] songs, no matter how embarrassing, and post the first line or two of the lyrics. Cross them off as people guess the song title and artist.

1. Climbing up on Solsbury Hill, I could see the city light "Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabrial, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] bironic
2. Beneath the moonlit sky, shadows walk beside the water California Promises by Jimmy Buffett, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] susnn
3. This ol' highway's getting longer, seems there ain't no end in sight "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)" by Garth Brooks, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] katriel1987
4. Hey, little sister, what have you done "White Wedding" by Billy Idol, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kristen999
5. Finally I figured out, but it took a long long time "All For You" by Sister Hazel, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] bironic
6. You love her but she loves him, and he loves somebody else "Love Stinks" by J. Geils Band - [livejournal.com profile] susnn got the title but not the artist, but I went ahead and gave it to her anyway. :D
7. I spent twenty years trying to get out of this place, I was looking for something I couldn't replace "Who Says You Can't Go Home" by Bon Jovi, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] greyias
8. Ride, ride my see-saw, take this place on this trip just for me "Ride My See-Saw" by the Moody Blues, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] trishkafibble
9. I never thought I'd change my opinion again, but you moved me in a way I'd never known "Break Me Shake Me" by Savage Garden, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] xparrot
10. Came in from a rainy Thursday, on the avenue "Ordinary World" by Duran Duran, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kristen999
11. Driving home this evening, could have sworn we had it all worked out "Cuts Like a Knife" by Bryan Adams
12. And she was lying in the grass, and she could hear the highway breathing "And She Was" by the Talking Heads, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kyuuketsukirui
13. Where it began, I can't begin to know, but then I know it's growing strong "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond
14. Here I stand, head in hand, turn my face to the wall "Hide Your Love Away", originally by the Beatles but covered here by Pearl Jam, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] roga
15. Holiday quiet on these streets, except for some stubborn leaves "What About Everything by Carbon Leaf, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] xparrot
16. I hate the world today, you're so good to me I know but I can't change "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] bironic
17. I enjoy this life as a drifter, seems to keep me moving around "Stranded on a Sandbar" by Jimmy Buffett
18. See the world through your cynical eyes, you're a troubled young man I can tell "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)" by Styx, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] susnn and [livejournal.com profile] trishkafibble
19. Well, we're fighting in the streets, with our children at our feet "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] susnn
20. Twenty, twenty, twenty-four hours to go, I wanna be sedated "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kristen999 and [livejournal.com profile] kyuuketsukirui

Okay, these are insanely easy this time. I swear there are some very obscure songs in my playlist, but they didn't seem to float to the surface on this particular go-round, for the most part. :D

EDIT: Just over half of them guessed at this point. I can't believe no one's gotten #19; I figured that one was well-known enough to be a total gimme.

ETA2: Most have been guessed; I added the others.

Correct! :)

14 - You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, Beatles.
ext_1981: (Sanzo headache)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's actually a Pearl Jam cover of the Beatles song, but there's no way anyone could get THAT, so I figure close enough. :D

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's actually the version that popped into mind! I love it :-)

1. Solsbury Hill / Peter Gabriel
5. All For You / Sister Hazel
16. Bitch / Meredith Brooks

Fun meme. It's funny -- I only know 5. and 16. (and 12.) because they came out the same summer we listened endlessly to this short-lived pop station.
ext_1981: (ROUS)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct! Yeah, just about everything that came up in shuffle this time are songs that tend to get heavy play on pop and rock radio stations.
ext_3572: (Default)

[identity profile] xparrot.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, I actually get some!

9. "Break Me"/Savage Garden
15. "What About Everything"/Carbon Leaf (played this one on repeat 'til I memorized it!)
ext_1981: (Whaleverse-Rodney working)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured either you or [livejournal.com profile] naye would get the Carbon Leaf song, since it's because of you guys and that Doctor Who songvid that I have it. (And yeah, I had it looped for quite a while too!) :D

Songs

[identity profile] fitzwiggity.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I recognize number four, but I can't place it. The only other one that I really know is number 16 which now that I try and think of it I can't remember what the song actually is. (Grrr...)

Re: Songs

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Both of them have been guessed; see edited post for answers.

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey! I know a few of those! :D

7 - Who Says You Can't Go Home - Bon Jovi and Jeniffer Nettles

The other ones some people have already listed off.
ext_1981: (Wiseguy-Vinnie moodlit)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep -- well, it's the solo Bon Jovi version, not the duet, but you basically got it.

[identity profile] katriel1987.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
#3 is Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) by Garth Brooks, if I recall correctly. And it disturbs me that I know that, since I'm no Garth fan.
ext_1981: (Wiseguy-Vinnie moodlit)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a Garth fan either, which makes it kind of hilarious to me that there are several of his songs on my master playlist. (And you're correct.)

[identity profile] susnn.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Won't get fooled again" by The Who. :-)
ext_1981: (Whaleverse-Rodney working)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I knew someone out there had to get this one! :D

[identity profile] susnn.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, getting serious now.

#2 is Buffet's California Promise

#6 is Love Stinks. I can't recall the artist at the moment. I just remember thinking that the title was very appropriate to the lyrics.

#18 is Angry Young Man. Ringtones

And I know I know #17. I'm going to have a V-8 moment at 0230, I just know it.
ext_1981: (SGA-Game-John-look)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Right on #2. #6 ... I'll give you that one; I'm probably going to post the answers tomorrow morning anyhow. (It's J. Geils Band.) On number 18, you've got the wrong artist and the title mostly wrong, at least from the version I have, but I think you're thinking of the right song. (Ringtones is a band?) I'm going to leave that one open for now because I'm not absolutely sure it's the same song, though ...

[identity profile] susnn.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. Let's try this when I'm not talking on the phone, helping my niece download a ringtone for her new phone and surfing the web.

Styx and "Fooling yourself, the Angry Young Man" for #18.
ext_1981: (Abby)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, that makes more sense! :D
ext_1981: (SGA-dorks)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
I just edited in the remaining couple of titles that no one had guessed ... #17 was "Stranded on a Sandbar" by Jimmy Buffett, which you probably would have gotten eventually since you also got #2

[identity profile] trishkafibble.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
#8 = "Ride My See-saw" by the Moody Blues
#18 = "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)" by Styx

...Well, now I see what it takes to bring me out into the open--a chance to prove my obscure pop-culture knowledge (though who'dve thunk one of The Moody Blues' biggest hits would be a stumper?!). I lurk regularly on your site, Sholio...um, to the point of having you on my RSS feed list and everything. LJ hates me, though, so I rarely brave the comment box. Suffice it to say I love what you write, fiction and non-. Rock on, my dear!

[identity profile] trishkafibble.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Bah! Sorry, susnn, didn't mean to try to grab your limelight--guess I should've read all the comments before posting! =/ Still, I might not have been able to resist--Styx was my first favorite band, from way back in my preteen years, and I used to know that song by heart!! <3
ext_1981: (Whaleverse-Rodney working)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, someone got the Moody Blues one! :D

Feel free to lurk at will; I'm not particular. And thanks for the praise! *blush*

[identity profile] susnn.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. V-8 moment. Although I think the first line is "I enjoy this life as a jester." And I can't believe I didn't catch the Moody Blues one. *Goes and digs out CDs for remedial listening.*

Styx was relatively easy since I have a relative who once upon a time could have been a poster child for that song. Amazing how music can spark a necessary discussion.

And I nominate "Cold Comfort" for best opening sentence evah!
ext_1981: (Abby)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Er ... oops. It's jester? Really? I've had the album for 15 years and always thought of that line ending in "drifter" -- although, now that you mention it, the other way sounds familiar too. Maybe it's one of those cases of having heard the song the wrong way at first and never quite being able to get the other way to stick in my head.

And thanks for the comment on Cold Comfort. :D That line was how the story began -- I mean, I suppose that's fairly obvious for an opening line (heh) but I wanted to use that line and then kinda built the story around it.
