This is the first year I've done the Feast of the Exceptional Rose, and it is very entertaining.
This post describes some different ways to get Masquing. Mostly, I've just been getting dead bats on the Wheel of Affection and trading them to the Lady in Lilac, then cashing that in for some of the cheaper companions when that particular opportunity card comes around. You can get more than one! (I was a little worried, the first time I traded some Masquing, that it would lock all future opportunities to do anything with it ... but no, you can keep using Masquing to "pay" for anything it will buy, as long as you still have enough.)
I'm not entirely sure how you boost your Masquing high enough to get the really expensive companions. I don't think you can do it with gifts (though maybe the Fate-locked gifts will push it higher?).
The only place other than the Carnival that I've found special Feast content is at the Shuttered Palace; I'm not sure if there is anything anywhere else that I've overlooked.
Also, I now have a River in a Box. Whatever shall I do with it? :D
Definitely worth zailing back to the city for all of this. :D Plus, I finished equipping and naming my newspaper (The Forgotten Quarterly), which I had essentially abandoned in my delight at having a SHIP!!1!!
