A somewhat random Dresden Files question
I've been doing a Thomas-centric reread of the series (... so sue me XD) and there's something that's been bugging me for a while.
When did Harry's mom lay the working on Harry and Thomas that is triggered when they soulgaze in Blood Rites?
During the soulgaze, Margaret tells Harry that she did it because she wanted her sons to know each other. But Harry wasn't born yet when Margaret left Lord Raith, which was (as far as we know) the last time Thomas saw her. And then she died in childbirth with Harry. So anything she did to Thomas must have been done before she left.
Except ... she didn't know that she was going to have another son yet, so how could she have left a spell on Thomas that involved his brother?
There are two possible explanations I can come up with (... well, other than "the author forgot", obviously *g*):
1) Thomas's version of the spell was much more general and less specific than Harry's. After all, we only see Harry's side of things, and the conversation that Margaret has with him. So, while Harry's version of it was basically "I am your mom, and this is your brother", Thomas might have gotten something entirely different. (Alternatively, I guess the spell could have been vague enough to adapt to whatever circumstances required; she didn't give them anything specific, she just left a little piece of her magic, and herself, that would tell them whatever they needed to know at the point it was triggered.)
2) Margaret did actually know she would have another son, because she saw the future. I don't remember exactly where they talked about precognition in Dresden Files, but what I vaguely remember is that it was stated that predicting the future is possible, it's just a really bad idea. And since Margaret was one of the most powerful wizards around, and not especially concerned for following the rules, she could certainly have done this. Maybe it was even what prompted her to flee Lord Raith and leave Thomas behind. (She must've had a good reason; leaving on her own is one thing, but abandoning Thomas to his homicidal father seems like an awfully cruel thing to do.)
Thoughts?
