More random (spoilery) comments on the Falco books

Heh, so I finished reading "Shadows in Bronze", the second of the M Didius Falco novels tonight.

My reaction to a thing that happened about 3/4 of the way through the book was as follows:

I actually sat there staring at the page looking exactly like the emoticon, being all gut-punched and going YOU EVIL TERRIBLE AUTHOR! YOU KILLED PETRO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

It was such a perfect setup for it, too, because everything that had led up to that, all the stuff with Petro's family and his daughter's birthday party and all of that, made this the obvious moment when the hero's best friend would die, out of nowhere, to motivate him on his revenge quest. It was the narratively cliche moment for it to happen.

Then I read the next page. XD

Good death fakeout, I gotta say.

I love that Falco goes all revenge-questy anyway, because YOU DO NOT HURT FALCO'S FRIENDS AND LIVE.

These books! I am very ♥ ♥ ♥ about them right now. My complete and total love for the fact that Falco is basically the exact opposite of the angsty lone hero, and is in fact surrounded by an unwanted entourage of annoying but loving friends and family wherever he goes, cannot be textually rendered. (LOL, the whole thing where he almost drowns and the entire group takes it upon themselves to teach him to swim whether he likes it or not? AWESOME.)

Also, Petro still reminds me of Peter.
