Suggestions, flist!

So, my main computer is a laptop, and one of the problems I'm having right now (the only problem, really) is that the headphone jack is starting to die.

The reason why it's starting to die is that it's not really meant to have the headphones taken in and out as often as I do. I swap it a couple times a day, because when I'm home alone, I prefer to listen to music (or whatever I'm watching) out loud, and when I'm not home alone, I prefer to use the headphones.

I could deal with it temporarily by sucking it up and not being quite so sensitive about other people hearing my music or TV shows or whatever. But I'll still need the headphones for listening to music late at night, or in airports, or for vidding (because I suspect that would really drive anyone else in the room bonkers).

Do such things as USB headphones exist? Or some sort of dongle that I could permanently plug into my headphone jack to give me an external, replaceable part to plug/unplug my regular headphones?

To make things more difficult, I am severely high-maintenance about headphones. My husband got me a set of wireless headphones as a gift awhile back and I hate them -- they are big, earmuff style headphones, and they press on my ears and hurt, as well as preventing me from hearing anything else when I'm wearing them. The only kind of headphones I like are the little supercheap ones with the foam covers, like the ones that used to come with Walkmans. Typically I bend the middle bar so that they rest very lightly on my ears, and then listen to music (or whatever I'm watching) quietly so that I can hear what else is going on in the room. I loathe headphones that block room noise completely, which lets out any kind of high-end earmuff-style headphone. And I can't use earbuds because they don't stay in.

What would be absolutely ideal for me would be something I could plug into my USB port or headphone jack that would give me an external place to be always plugging/unplugging my headset, so that I don't ruin the built-in one in the computer by doing it. Do such things exist? Does anyone know?

ETA: hahaha, or possibly I could just look up "external headphone jack" on Amazon and find that a) yes, they do exist, and b) they're cheap enough that I could buy one even without being positive it'll work on my Mac. For $2.78 I can afford to experiment a bit. NEVER MIND! (But if anyone has other suggestions I hadn't thought of, I'm totally open to them.)
