On the road

Quick drive-by post (as it were) from Ithaca, NY ... my sister is at work and it's been raining off and on, plus she's got the car, so I'm hanging out around her apartment, working on fic and surfing the net. Ahh, vacation....

Which is half over already! I had a blast in Boston with [livejournal.com profile] derry667 and [livejournal.com profile] tipper_green and their friend Mog; I still can't quite get past feeling like the uncool kid at the party who can't believe that the cool kids actually don't seem to mind me hanging out with them. And I can't tell you how much fun it is to get to talk to other fangirls in real life -- nothing screams "GEEK!" like playing Life Signs Detector with a GPS in downtown Boston, for sure ...

Next stage of the vacation is a road trip around New Hampshire and Maine; my sister has to work tomorrow and then we'll be hitting the road early Monday morning. No itinerary, just a road map (which we have solemnly vowed not to peek at unless we really get lost), a couple of guidebooks to hiking trails in NH and along the Maine coast, and a full tank of gas. Wheee!

Sounds awesome. Go poke around in a gorge for me - I miss Ithaca and it's gorges.

Hope you have a blast and only get lost in the fun way. And keep your eyes open for moose.

SOunds great. Have fun!!

Maine has awesome campsites. *Sniffles* I miss them.

Have a good break and DON'T think about work

[identity profile] bramble-rose.livejournal.com 2007-09-09 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I'll fangirl along with you, although I'd be fangirling you, too!! Derry667, Tipper, & was that Mog, like m7ATF Mog??

Have fun in Maine; LOONS! Echoing the watch for Moose (but you know that, right?)

[identity profile] wneleh.livejournal.com 2007-09-09 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
was that Mog, like m7ATF Mog??

I was wondering that too. She lives *here*?

Thanks! Yup, going to look at gorges tomorrow unless it's pouring rain. :)

It looks quite beautiful up there! I'm looking forward to it.

Er ... I'm afraid I can't tell you; I really don't know what Mog's fannish activities actually ARE, but she's very nice! As they all are. And now I'm feeling like a bit of a namedropper, so, um ... *scuttles away, embarrassed*

[identity profile] bramble-rose.livejournal.com 2007-09-09 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please don't be embarrassed!!! One of the few on-line friends I actually know personally I rarely even name because it'd be namedropping to the n-th degree (and I know her because she's married to a friend of mine from college) We got together at a funeral (her hubby and me) and were catching up when I found out who she was on-line *g*

I can't tell you how weird it was to see Ithaca mentioned on my flist. I went to college there for 2 years (IC). I remember it being a very cool town. I'd love to go back there some day. Anyway, sounds like you're having an awesome trip. Life Signs Detector? Awesome. *g*

Ahhh, I'm getting positively homesick reading this travelogue! Ithaca, Boston, now hiking in Maine? Awesome - have fun!

M7 fanfic has many AUs, many of them shared. The largest was created by someone named Mog, who transported the characters to modern day Denver as ATF agents; it works very well.

I just googled 'M7 ATF AU' and got over 77,000 hits; all my own M7 writing is ATF AU. So, maybe between 10,000 and 100,000 stories in it?

Hee! I hope you had fun! Sad I only saw you and the Aussie for a few hours, but they were a wonderful few hours! And, goodness gracious, cool? Us? That's like describing Antartica as hot. Maybe in a few million years...LOL! Geeky fangirls forever!

Have fun up in the woods! Watch out for black bears! And Libertarians! And roving presidential candidates! New Hampshire's ripe with all that (Live Free or Die, man. It's a way of life). If you see John Edwards, give him a kiss for me. And if you see Obama, ask him if he really likes Feta Cheese on his burger. LOL!

Oh, how cool! How far along is the fall where you are? I remember Maine as being gorgeous in the summer, but I've heard the New England area is just stunning during the fall - might still be too early for that, though?

Have fun! ♥ (And I'd love to see pictures, later!)

LOL! I can't believe how many people I keep meeting online who've been to Ithaca or lived there. Small world!

... and the life signs detector thing was too fun. Yes, I am a giant nerd.

The road trip was awesome! We actually used the hiking books! And Boston, and meeting you guys, was so cool! I really would love to come back sometime when I can see you for more than just a couple of hours.

No presidential candidate sightings, though. Alas! But somehow I don't think they're stumping in the parts of the state where we ended up.

It's too early for the really pretty colors, which made me sad! We drove pretty far north in Maine, right up into Quebec, hoping for fall colors, but we only saw a few places where the trees had really started to turn. Still a nice trip though! There will certainly be pictures once I'm back in Alaska so I can upload and resize them.

[identity profile] tipper-green.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah well. Maybe I'll go up there and throw some pot shots at them myself. Ooh, maybe I could start some political rumours! "So, Senator Clinton, how does it feel to be compared to a toaster?" "What?" "Oh, you haven't heard? It's all over the internet! They say you toast with the best of them!" "I'm sorry?" "Wow. Your PR people really aren't on the ball, are they. For shame. Google Toaster. See what you find." Next day, CNN's political ticker: "CLINTON COMPARED TO TOASTER! What does it mean?" Oh, the glee...

So glad you had a good time hiking! Sorry about the topsy turvy weather!

[identity profile] derry667.livejournal.com 2007-09-16 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
was that Mog, like m7ATF Mog??

To answer your question, yes, it is the same Mog, creator of the ATF AU, that we're talking about. Even if [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper did not realise her brush with stardom at the time ;-)

[identity profile] derry667.livejournal.com 2007-09-16 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
nothing screams "GEEK!" like playing Life Signs Detector with a GPS in downtown Boston,

Or using it as a HUD while you're driving... ;-)

I just got back home today. A wee bit jetlagged. Work tomorrow. *sigh*

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, the HUD thing was BRILLIANT. I want to get a GPS just so I can tape it to my windshield. Yes, I am that pathetic ... but probaby not pathetic enough to actually DO it.

Glad you got back safe! I still seem to be on New England time ... I went to bed last night at 8:30 and woke up at 4:30. I suppose it's better than being adjusted in the other direction though.
