Duncan MacLeod! <3

Duncan MacLeod OF CLAN MACLEOD!

1. I wasn't expecting to fall for Duncan like I did, mostly because I wasn't expecting him to be the person he turned out to be. From what little I knew of the show, I'd pegged him as a square-jawed, humorless, kind of bland hero type. I was not expecting him to be so incredibly sweet, and funny, and vulnerable, and hopeful, open to new experiences and dedicated to protecting the helpless and always, always trying to make the world a better place in large and small ways. By about halfway through season one, I'd already hit the point where I was willing to follow this protagonist anywhere. *g*

2. I adore Duncan/Tessa and Duncan/Amanda -- could not choose between them, luckily don't have to -- and Duncan/Amanda/Methos is the OT3 of my heart.

3. Oh ... this is hard, because I love all of Duncan's friendships a lot. I'm gonna have to go with Duncan and Joe here. I love their awkward dance back and forth between enmity and friendship through the seasons, culminating at last in a friendship so deep they'd willingly die for each other, a friendship that's weathered some of the hardest blows any relationship can take.

4. Hmm, unpopular opinions ... I don't know how unpopular it is, but I don't think Duncan is even remotely as inflexible and resistant to change as he's often portrayed in fic and fannish meta. He's got a strong moral code, but that's not the same thing as being close-minded, though I get the impression that people sometimes confuse the two. This is not to say that it can't be a flaw, too, but Duncan has always struck me as a character who's very willing to confront his own prejudices if he can see that there's a reason to do so. Just the fact that he's learned so many things and become friends with so many different kinds of people is evidence of that.

5. Wow ... the series took Duncan so many places that it's awfully hard to think of anything I would have wanted to see that didn't happen! Duncan is a character who's been explored to a depth that other shows can only dream of. *g* There are a few things that I would've liked to see more of -- I wish that we'd seen Duncan and Methos in the immediate aftermath of Alexa's death, for example, and I wish they hadn't jumped straight from Joe being shot in "Judgment Day" to a few days later in the basement of the bookstore, because I would've loved to see Duncan dealing with a badly injured Joe while trying to enlist Methos's help in hiding him. The only other thing I can think of is that it would've been fun to see Duncan dealing with kids a little more often; that was something we very rarely got to see. But, basically, everything I wanted to happen to Duncan has already happened in the show.

Ronon! :)

1. I was fairly indifferent to Ronon in season two, and then fell for him like an absolute ton of bricks when we hit "Sateda". It was fascinating to go back at that point, rewatch the earlier episodes and see all the things I'd missed the first time around -- his sweetness and occasional shyness and that little-kid hop that he does when Teyla invites him to go offworld with her in "Trinity". Ronon is one of those characters I just flat-out admire -- for being the person that he is (warm, affectionate, loyal) after everything he went through. And I think he gets one of the best character arcs in the series; his growth from a very closed-off, socially isolated person to becoming a member of the team and of the Atlantis "family" is pretty well realized.

2. Ronon, I think, is a character that I don't really actively ship with anyone, but can read paired off with almost anyone as long as the author can do a good job of selling it. There's no Ronon pairing that makes my heart soar, but I can read him with anyone on the team, with Keller, with Amelia.

3. I think it's a toss-up between Ronon and any of his three teammates. They all have relationships that are unique and interesting to explore. I love the affectionate-playful sibling dynamic that he has with Teyla, the fellow-soldier camaraderie and friendly rivalry with Sheppard, the prickly edges to his relationship with Rodney.

4. I don't really think this is unpopular, at least not among Ronon fans, but I think Sateda was a high-tech enough world that Ronon would understand and be able to use high technology, and I'm bothered by stories that portray him as essentially a baffled barbarian in a high-tech world (even if it's not entirely out of keeping with how the show itself wrote him on occasion). My early stories don't portray him that way, I don't think, but there's a sudden sea change that takes place in the way I wrote Ronon after Sateda aired.

5. Oh man. So many things. I wish he'd gotten more plots that weren't fighting-related. I wish we'd gotten to see more of his life outside the team -- his personal life, what he did when he wasn't fighting or sparring with Marines. I wish they'd actually remembered the fact that he is from a relatively high-tech world by Pegasus standards (see #4 *g*). I think the thing I would have wanted to see most for Ronon, though, was more development with those 300+ Satedan refugees that we heard about in Trinity. Did he go "home" sometimes? Did he know anyone there? I would have really loved to see more (or, well, ANYTHING) with the Satedan survivors.

Hee! I'm shocked - shocked I say!

1. Rodney was my gateway character into SGA - the one I fell for before anyone else had really had a chance to grow on me. I was fairly indifferent to everybody in "Rising"; then "Hide & Seek" happened, and that was it, I was completely done for. *g* I just love his underlying sweetness and courage beneath the prickly shell - the way he stepped up, in a way that even he probably didn't know he was capable of, to become the person that he became in Pegasus. I also love characters who are competent at what they do, and I loved that Rodney was shown being competent, solving problems, taking charge.

2. I like Rodney/Keller a lot. I don't really see Rodney/Teyla being particularly plausible in canon, but I love reading it in fic. I also have a big soft spot for Rodney/Sam, but only in AUs (it's another one where I just can't see it working out in canon, to the point where I can't really buy it in a canon setting, but I'm a total softy for them). I used to read a lot of John/Rodney, but that pairing kinda played out for me a couple of years ago and I don't see myself going back to it.

3. Rodney and John. Definitely. They were, once again, my gateway drug into the show. *g*

4. Oh man. I have SO MANY OF THESE for Rodney (probably more than any other character I can think of) ... I don't even know where to BEGIN. This is like a whole comment of its own.
- I think his allergies and hypoglycemia are mostly hypochondria. I don't think they're entirely in his head, but I don't believe they're anywhere near as severe and life-threatening as he claims. I can definitely read fic where he suffers life-threatening allergic reactions, but it's not my head-canon for him.
- I like Rodney/Keller. I don't think they're bad for each other, that she somehow lured him away from the team, or that she's trying to change him into something he's not. I think they're cute together and that they have as much of a shot at working out long-term as any couple that's just gotten together.
- Rodney is a terrible boss, he's equally terrible to work with, and I think most people on Atlantis dislike him. I do think it's hard to keep hating Rodney on long-term exposure -- he tends to win people over once they get to know him (with exceptions - see other unpopular opinion below *g*) -- but there aren't many people who've actually put in the work that it takes to find out.
- Ronon and Rodney genuinely can't stand each other. They don't care about each other deep down; they just don't like each other and probably never will.
- I don't buy the idea that Rodney would be especially bothered by people not liking him. He cares about the good opinions of the people he loves, but even in those cases I don't think he sits around stressing about what they think of him. He's certainly not going to fold up like a crushed paper cup under other people's opinions. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure that he hasn't even got the social awareness to notice that people don't like him most of the time. (Someone, I don't remember who, suggested that someone should write a post-Trinity story in which the entire Atlantis base shuns him, and Rodney totally doesn't notice -- all he notices is that he's getting more work done because people aren't bothering him with stupid questions all the time. *g* Which seems far more plausible to me than the other way!)
- Rodney's not the only person who can do his job. He's extremely smart, and good at what he does, and I love that about him, but he's not indispensible. I think Zelenka would do just as well in his shoes, and probably better at the people-management side of it.

5. You know, I'm awfully happy with how Rodney's arc played out. I think I would've liked to see more of him and Keller becoming friends as well as lovers -- particularly the two of them playing together, or nerding out together. (I think part of my fondness for the pairing is that I totally think they would, but we never saw it.) I also would've liked to see more interaction with Teyla. But really, there was an abundance of riches in the Rodney department on the show, everything from h/c to action to romance. I can't think of anything I really wanted that I didn't get.

Amanda it is! :)

1. I love her. I was a little wary in her first episode because I wasn't sure how the Duncan/Amanda vs. Duncan/Tessa thing was going to play out, but I started falling for her pretty hard in season two and it just got stronger. I love how sweet she is under all her defenses; I love how she always does the right thing in the end, even when she has to be pushed into it. And I also love that, while she's not the best fighter out there, she's canny and savvy and that the show kept giving her chances to use her thief skills rather than just paying lip service to them.

2. Duncan/Amanda is the pairing of my heart for her. I love it in large part because there's no way it's ever going to be a hearts-and-flowers, white-picket-fence relationship, and yet there's no doubt that they both adore each other and will keep coming back to each other, even though they both have other lovers in the meantime. I'm also quite gone for the whole concept of Duncan/Amanda/Methos, and I'm pretty sure Amanda/Rebecca is at least borderline canon. *g* I like the idea of Amanda/Methos in theory, but I'm not sure how it would play out if I'd read a whole lot of it, especially since I love them so much as friends.

3. Does Amanda actually have platonic relationships? *g* I think I'm going to go with Amanda & Methos on this one. What I love about them is that the main thing drawing them together, initially at least, is that they both care about Duncan, but then they go ahead and form their own little friendship on the side, until eventually they're in each other's tiny circle of "people I'd risk my life for", and I really loved that. I also adore Amanda & Methos as partners in crime (or partners in conspiring behind Duncan's back). They're so cute that way.

4. ... hmm. It bothers me when fic downplays Amanda's importance to Duncan. She's not his Most Important Person (TM), but she's undeniably part of his innermost circle. There's a general tendency in fic to write the Joe/Methos/Duncan triad with nary a mention of Amanda anywhere (that, at least, is not inconsistent with canon - the way they wander in and out of each other's lives - and it doesn't bother me at all here and there; it's the pattern that starts bothering me after a while) or - and this one does bug me a lot - to refer to Duncan's liaisons with Amanda as meaningless flings or portray their relationship as solely sex-based.

5. After watching "Indiscretions", I really wish we'd had more episodes like that with Duncan's friends - episodes where Duncan wasn't around a whole lot, and the main focus was on two (or more) of his friends having an adventure of their own. I would've loved an episode like that with Amanda and Methos (though in some sense "Methuselah's Gift" was that), or Amanda and Joe, or even all three of them.

Yay!! I might not entirely agree with you about Rodney and Ronon's 'friendship', but each to their own on that!! As for the rest, yep, pretty much in agreement with you! And I so wish someone would write that post-Trinity fic!!! Sure, I love my angsty (but NOT woobie) Rodney in fic-land (and the occasions we see it on the show), but at the same time, there's a part of me that recognises he's probably not aware of the dislike he engenders in people. In fact, in McKay and Mrs Miller, he seems surprised when Rod says something along those lines!! *g*

It would have been nice to see more of Rodney and Teyla together, but I guess we have fic for that now...!!

Kataraaaaaa!

1. I spent a lot of season one trying to figure out how I felt about Katara, because while I did really like her as an individual, I was kind of bothered by the group's only female character filling so many of the stereotypical only-girl-on-the-team roles: she was their healer, she was the bossy-sister, "only serious character in a room full of jokesters" type, etc. I think this was helped tremendously by the introduction of Toph and the other female characters in season two, and by the show developing Katara's flaws and her goofier side as the series wore on. By the end of the show, I adored her -- I loved watching her blossom and come into her own, in terms of using her powers and also just as a person. She grew up; all of them did, but I think Katara changed and grew more than most of the others (aside from Zuko). And I loved that she was, in her way, actually one of the darkest characters on the show (at least on the protagonists' side) -- she was more than capable of using her powers to hurt people, and she had to struggle against the temptation to do so. I liked that a lot, because they could so easily have gone the "sweet gentle healer" route with her, and they didn't.

2. A:tLA is a show where I'm fairly OTP-ish about the show's canon pairings, so I'm pretty much Katara/Aang all the way, unless it's an AU of the total-AU type (as opposed to the branching-off-canon type), aside from a few rare occasions where the author has really done a good job of selling the pairing.

3. Favorite gen relationship is definitely Katara and Zuko (though Katara and Sokka runs a close second, because I am such a sucker for sibling relationships). But I am an even bigger sucker for "enemies becoming reluctant friends", and Katara and Zuko punched those buttons hard. I think one of the reasons why I really can't read Katara/Zuko unless it's a total AU is that one of the reasons why I loved them so much is because there wasn't anything sexual there (at least not in terms of how I saw them); it wasn't about having a relationship, it was about two enemies finding common ground and forging a truce that turns into a reluctant friendship and partnership. I didn't want sex to be added to it, and I was pleased that the show didn't go there.

4. My unpopular Katara opinion, hands down, is that she was completely justified in this show's "Trinity" moment *g*: the way she acted towards Zuko at the Western Air Temple. People seem to forget that she was entirely willing to trust Zuko and give him a second chance at Ba Sing Se, even after he'd spent the last two seasons attacking them and trying to deliver her friends into the hands of the enemy -- whereupon he promptly betrayed them, tried to kill them again (and would have succeeded if not for Katara herself), and handed over the city they'd been defending to the enemy. Frankly, at this point I think Katara's distrust is the sensible option! Sure, he says he's changed, but he's said that before; why should anyone, least of all Katara (the person he most directly betrayed in Ba Sing Se), believe him this time?

5. The show gave me everything I could want for Katara and then some. Actually, it was like they were going down a checklist of "everything I want from Katara's story arc" at the end there. Reconciliation with Zuko? Check! Having to heal Zuko in the midst of battle? Check! Heroism? Check! Darkness? Check! Getting her own big fight scene and defeating one of the show's major baddies? Check! Her whole character arc was fantastic. I wouldn't change a thing.

Yeah, I think most people don't agree with me on Rodney and Ronon; I'm okay with that. *g* Actually, I can be sold on a wide range of characterizations in fic (I do have a soft spot for stories where they're close, or friendship stories with the two of them -- I just don't really see it in canon).

Wow ... Darien! *tries to get brain into an I-Man headspace*

1. OH DARIEN. My sweet dork boy. I love how he's completely awful at being a bad guy, not for lack of trying - he's so good-hearted and well-meaning, even though he doesn't trust easily (and, frankly, given the people he's around, there are good reasons for that). But I also adore him for his snarkiness and sarcasm; Darien's "laugh in the face of danger" approach to life never fails to make me grin and love him.

2. ... I don't actually have a pairing for Darien. Like, any at all. I was always very OTP-ish about Bobby/Claire when was watching the show, but that was the only pairing that floated my boat at all. I read Darien/Bobby occasionally, but really I preferred them as friends.

3. Darien and Bobby, with the Darien-Bobby-Claire triad a close runner-up (or possibly on top). I really truly love Darien and Bobby's easy byplay and banter with each other, with the deep thread of caring that underlies it, but I also love what happens when you add Claire to the mix.

4. ... do I have any unpopular opinions for this show? *muses* I can't actually think of anything.

5. It's been long enough since I watched the show that I'd have to watch it again to know for sure if I still react the same way, but I remember being frustrated that, after a couple of really neat "saving each other's lives" episodes in the early part of season one with Darien and Bobby, the show never really went there again. I kept wanting dire peril and action, and what we kept getting instead was much more lightweight, farcical plots, especially in season two -- which, okay, I liked the show's humor also, but I wanted more seriousness than it was apparently capable of delivering. So my wish list for the show would have included at least one more serious/angsty/saving-each-other's-lives plot than we got.

Fitz! :) (No Fitz icons, so Duncan and Amanda will have to do.)

1. I didn't really fall for Fitz 'til the episode in which he died, which was kind of a bummer. *g* Imagine my (delighted) surprise that this turned out to be far from the last time we saw him! And by the end of the series, I was loving him to pieces -- I absolutely adore his and Duncan's friendship: bantery, constantly one-upping each other, totally willing to die for each other BUT WILL COMPLAIN ABOUT IT ALL THE WAY, THANKS. Fitz is so incredibly sweet, probably one of the flat-out nicest characters on the show. I'm so, so happy that even after he was gone, he was never forgotten. Actually, this reminds me that I've been meaning to go back and watch his first episode now that I'm all fallen for him and everything. I have a feeling that my emotional reaction to Fitz being captured and tortured would be a whole lot stronger now that I know him better!

2. Fitz/every-woman-on-the-show will do nicely, thanks. *g*

3. Fitz and Duncan all the way. They are adorable.

4. Er ... I can't think of an unpopular opinion that I have about Fitz.

5. Well, NOT DYING would have been nice. *g* But, really, I was pretty happy with what we got with Fitz. It would've been neat to see more of his interaction with people who weren't Duncan, although once he died there was no plausible way that could happen (unless we got Amanda & Fitz flashbacks?). All in all, I was fairly happy with it, aside from the whole DEAD thing.

Ooh, Jack!

1. I absolutely adore Jack just for the fact that he exists -- that he's a dashing, sexy action hero who is openly bisexual (anything-sexual, really) and that his onscreen romances include as many males as females. I'm also happy that I got in on the ground floor with Jack: I "met" him in the first season of Doctor Who, before Torchwood, before the character really took off. I'd vaguely heard of him, but didn't know anything about him beyond the fact that he existed and was pretty popular in fandom, so I got to discover him entirely fresh and new and unspoiled. I remember the total shock when he came back to life, the even greater shock when he turned out to be immortal. Of course it doesn't hurt anything that John Barrowman is completely adorable, too. I still like DW!Jack a lot better than TW!Jack, and I'm not entirely sure why; there's just something about the lighter, less angsty way that he fits into the DW!verse that works a lot better for me.

2. I think it's impossible to enjoy Jack as a character without being able to handle Jack/anyone, so, um, yeah. I don't think I have a preferred pairing for Jack, but I also don't think there's a pairing that I genuinely would not be able to not only read, but actually see as quite plausible in terms of canon.

3. I'm going with Jack and Martha here! I absolutely loved their interactions in season three of DW, and I could see them remaining friends and staying in touch afterwards. (Actually, given the way she turns up in TW, I'm pretty sure that's canon.)

4. I liked Children of Earth, and while I can understand the objections to Ianto being killed off, it didn't ruin anything for me or feel like a major betrayal.

5. I don't know if this is a plausible thing to hope for, but I really want to see Jack turn up in the Eleventh Doctor version of DW. I'd like to see how he and Eleven relate to each other, and would absolutely adore some Jack/Amy/Rory interactions.

Damn, someone's already snagged Methos. So how about Joe? :D

The downside is that I never found the Katara/Aang growing-up-together and settling-in-a-relationship-together fic I would have needed to convince me of the pairing. I just pretend it's out there somewhere. ^^

METHOS!

This is going to be slightly difficult, because Methos was the character I asked

trobadora about, and then we were talking about him, so now I'm trying to sort out how *I* feel about him ...

1. I suppose it was evident from reading my episode reactions that I waffled a lot on Methos as I went through the series, but I ended up firmly in the "I love him <3" camp. *g* In the end, I think the thing that sold me hardcore on Methos is that I will never fail to fall hard for characters who hate to admit it but really care a lot deep down, and Methos is that trope IN SPADES. I think one of the reasons why I waffled on him, actually, is that he's so good at pretending he doesn't care that he even had me fooled for a while. *g* But, yeah -- actions speak louder than words, and when it comes right down to it, for all his claims of being the ultimate survivor, he'll do just about anything for the handful of people in his inner circle, and them for him. After five thousand years and all the unimaginable loss that he's certainly experienced, he's still more than capable of love, and sacrificing for love, and I adore that about him. But you never quite know for sure until he does it -- it's not a guarantee that he's going to play the hero, so it's extra special when he does. He's also just fascinating to watch (it helps immensely that Peter Wingfield is gorgeous *g*), and the show gives him wonderful stuff to do. The Methos episodes and Methos scenes are some of the best in the whole series, and I don't think it's just because Methos is in them; they're just damn fine episodes, full of humor and friendship and pathos.

2. Methos/Alexa owns my heart, even though it's doomed ... possibly because it's doomed. Methos/Amanda/Duncan is my OT3; I don't really see them being stable and happy as a long-term permanent thing, but I can see them coming together and falling apart and coming back together over the years, as Duncan and Amanda do. I can see Methos/Joe, but I'm not crazy about reading it. On the other hand, I can read Methos/Duncan, but don't really see it (at least without Amanda being involved too).

3. Oh, this is hard. I love Duncan and Methos's instant camaraderie and their casually-in-each-other's-space thing, but I think I might love Methos and Joe just that little bit more, for their emotional openness with each other, especially since it's totally not something you'd expect considering the people they are, but ... there it is. I can't even imagine Methos holding Duncan while he cries, the way he does Joe at the end of the season five finale, or Joe going out of his way to protect one of his other friends from getting their heart broken, as he does in "Timeless".

4. Methos is not a woobie, he's not a victim, and he doesn't sit around wallowing in angst because he thinks Duncan is mad at him. *g* And this should totally go without saying, but the fact that Cassandra hates and wants to kill the guy who raped her, tortured her, and wiped out her village is not in any way unjustified. I'm kind of boggled at the lengths that fandom will go to in an attempt to explain away Methos's actions in the past, because to me, the fact that he's spent 2000+ years very determinedly not being that person is a pretty fine selling point.

trobadora brought up this one, but I agree with her: I wish Methos hadn't vanished during the Ahriman arc. Especially with Ahriman impersonating Kronos, there was SO much potential for good story material that was squandered. Like I mentioned when I was talking about Duncan, I would've loved to see more of the aftermath of Alexa's death. It also would've been neat to see more of his flashbacks, since his memories not only go back much farther than Duncan's, but illuminate a whole different side of history. But most of what I can think of isn't whole new storylines with Methos, just "more of this, a little more of that".

Re 4: This is an unpopular opinion?? Huh, I'm glad I never got involved in that fandom.

Oh man. I wish. Katara-bashing is everywhere, especially in fic set around the general vicinity of late season three. Apparently the whole fandom (well, most of it) thinks that she was mean and abusive to poor Zuko for not trusting him (after multiple attempts to kill her and her friends, and one really huge betrayal - what in the world is she supposed to think?!).

I do think that Katara and Aang have a lot of growing up and settling into each other ahead of them. Actually, I can totally buy the two of them growing apart and eventually breaking up, as well -- it's just that breaking them up to put them together with other people is something that I really hate.

Joe it is! (I really need a Joe icon ...)

1. Love him! Love them all, really - if I had to choose favorites between Methos, Duncan, Joe and Amanda, I don't think I could do it - but I already had a thing for Jim Byrnes dating back to Wiseguy, so this didn't help. *g* I love how he starts out as this shadowy, mysterious, dangerous kind of guy, and you slowly get to know him and find out that he's also loyal and loving and funny and generous -- but also still shadowy and dangerous; he always has that edge to him. I love that most of his close friends are Immortals, and the way this constantly pushes and pulls him between duty and friendship.

2. I don't really ship Joe with anyone. Like I said above, I can see Joe/Methos, but it's not really something I seek out. Joe/OC pairings tend to work better for me than Joe with any of the main characters.

3. It's hard to choose between Joe and Duncan, and Joe and Methos, but I think Joe and Duncan has a bit of an edge here because they're just so marvelously conflicted. They're both very honorable and very driven by their convictions; unfortunately for them, their convictions pull them in opposite directions a lot of the time. But they love each other deeply enough to keep finding their way back, even after all the times they've been at odds.

4. By and large, Joe as written seems to agree pretty closely with Joe in my head. (Kind of an anomaly in this fandom. *g*)

5. I would've liked Joe to get more funny episodes, or funny bits in the episodes he was in. Generally Joe's episodes and scenes tended to be pretty serious, but I thought he did fine with the comedy bits that he did get in episodes like "Indiscretions", or the ones where the guys were all hanging out at the bar. Episodes like "Indiscretions" gave me a hankering for more Joe action episodes, too. On the other hand, I was pretty happy with all that we did get with him.
