My Yuletide and SGA Santa fic this year
The reveals on Yuletide and
sga_santa are up, so now I can 'fess up to my stories! I didn't really write outside my comfort zone this year; everything I wrote is, I think, very obviously mine (and quite a few people guessed them).
For
yuletide, I wrote two full-length stories and one short Treat:
Chase Scene - Dresden Files, gen - Harry, Murphy, Thomas, Justine (10,500 wds)
Harry's on the run with amnesia in a Chicago blizzard. Murphy's on his trail, but unfortunately he doesn't remember enough to know that she isn't the enemy.
My recipient,
seventhe, wanted anything with Harry and Murphy, and I saw in her Yuletide letter that she likes Thomas too, so I did one of my favorite stock plots from sci-fi and fantasy, "the one where the hero is so messed up that he thinks his friends are the bad guys". This story required lots of quality time with Google Maps for the Chicago landscape; I hope I didn't mess anything up too badly.
Rescue - Benjamin January Mysteries, gen - January, Shaw, Dominique (4000 wds)
"I don't plan these things!" January said. "They just -- happen." No specific spoilers for the books.
This was a long Treat; browsing the Yuletide letters right in my first flush of fannish love for the series, I saw
agonistes' request for January-Shaw buddyfic and wow, if there ever was a request right up my alley. :D It's interesting looking back on this story now that I've read the rest of the books, because they're so much more awkward and wary with each other in the first couple of books and that really shows here.
A Mistress or a Friend - Benjamin January Mysteries, Hannibal/Consuela (600 wds)
A brief tag to "Die Upon a Kiss". When Hannibal decided to accompany Consuela to Mexico City, how did that conversation go down?
wishfulaces wanted something with Hannibal, so I wrote this little last-minute Treat. Wow, writing Hannibal's dialogue is hard. I pretty much had to do it with one hand on the keyboard and the other flipping through Bartlett's Quotations in my lap ...
For
sga_santa, I wrote two stories:
The Hunters - light Rodney/Jennifer UST, mostly gen (26,500 wds)
On a diplomatic mission, Rodney, Jennifer and Teyla are overnight guests in a cliffside fortress. When darkness falls, an attack leaves Rodney a severely injured prisoner, and Jennifer and Teyla must get him back -- even if it means braving the lethal catacombs beneath the fortress with nothing but a couple of P90s plus wits, skill and luck.
I think at least three or four people guessed this was me. *g* This was for
x_varda_x, who wanted het (preferably Rodney/Jennifer) and Rodney whumping. Eventually I want to do a post about the process of writing this story, because I decided to use it as an exercise in outlining, and it worked really well. It's one of the few stories I've ever written where I've made a detailed outline and then actually stuck to it through the whole writing process. I'm hoping to take the lessons I learned from writing this story to apply to other stories in the future.
Satedan Justice - gen, team (10,700 wds)
Ronon is arrested for Kell's murder. Teamfic.
The 300 surviving Satedans mentioned in "Trinity" was a dangling loose end that I always wished the show itself had picked back up, but what else is fanfic for? Although picked up as a pinch hit for
stormylullabye at the last minute, this was very fun to write and I still find the team utterly delightful. My favorite bit to write was the duel, though; what can I say? I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.
