I want to go to San Diegooooooo

And not just for the Stargate panels, or because half the people I know are going to be there this weekend. Well, okay, that has something to do with it. Well, okay, quite a lot to do with it. *g*

But it's just been a long time since I was at a con at all. I was talking yesterday to a comics industry friend about getting "back in the game" and I really DO want to start doing conventions again. SDCC is the only one of the bigger conventions I've never been to; I always kind of wanted to, but since I was in the Midwest, I only ever could afford to do one West Coast con and that was APE (Alternative Press Expo) because it was really more my crowd, as far as actually managing to sell my books to people.

But there's something very appealing about going to a show as a "civilian", which is another thing I've never really done -- just being able to walk around and see stuff without finding someone to watch my table. (I've also always done shows alone, so the only times I could get away from my table was when I'd ask one of my booth neighbors to watch it for me for a minute.)

I think I'm just getting nostalgic for it. Cons are fun -- the party atmosphere, rubbing shoulders with all the (relatively) famous people, catching up with friends for dinner and drinks afterwards. I like living in the isolated place that I do, but I really can't afford to do cons at all anymore, and sometimes I do miss it quite a lot.

But I get to meet [livejournal.com profile] derry667 and [livejournal.com profile] tipper_green in Boston this fall, so I'll console myself with that! ^_^

I was this close to being able to go, but it fell through. :( I want to go! The only con I get to attend is an anime con called Kumoricon and no matter how many times I go as a regular attendee, I always end up on staff.

Ooo you get to meet some fun people in fall! lucky!

Why Boston?

You aren't the only one who's not going. :(

I got screwed over by the state of Misery & Missouri College on getting my massage license - an ordeal that's taken four months on something that should only take 4-6 weeks.

So, since I have been unable to work, I have had no income and thus, no $$ to spend on going to SDCC.

I wanted to go just because I had a blast last year and wanted to go harass the BCI Eclipse guys again about my first true fandom love - Galaxy Rangers. Not to mention getting to see what else David Hewlett, the fresh back from an HI vacation, uber geek, would be up to at SDCC.... :-p

But, I will be there next year with bells on and lugging a massage table across the country with me in order to make $$ at the con. So, if you ever make it down to the con, it's just a massive event that's almost impossible to take in. :)

Okay, back to studying.... national board exam next week Friday and then, Archon (uhm, pardon me, the wannabe World Con aka NASFIC, this year... :-p) where I will meet up w/ a friend from N'awlins. :)

Oh, I'm sorry you can't go!

We have a couple small anime cons here in Alaska, none of which I've ever been to. Perhaps I'll try one this spring...

I'm visiting my sister in Ithaca, and it turns out that [livejournal.com profile] derry667 is going to be in Boston around the same time I'm down there, and Tipper lives there. So it seemed well worth the drive! I didn't know anyone else I knew was there, too! It's such a small world ... we oughta try to meet up while I'm down there.

Crap! I'm sorry to hear that. Darned bureaucrats ...

I'm sort of experimentally thinking about having a table next year ... or maybe seeing if I can split table space with someone, since it's so expensive. Anyway, I would absolutely *love* to go ... and I'd especially love to go while I'm still so geeked about SGA, because it would be too awesome to see the actors in person.

I'd say come here if you could! Ah, alas money is so tight

I live a little north of Santa Barbara and was thinking of going, but my work schedule wouldn't accomodate it. I'll have to check out the dates for next year's con and just schedule some vacation time for that weekend, so I know for sure I can go.

I went to a Marvel convention once, but this would be so much MORE In the meanwhile, the boxes of comics I have in the garage and sga fanfic will have to keep me occupied. I really wish I was going though...

:)
I keep kicking myself that I never checked out that comic*con thing while I was going to college in LA - but then, I spent most of college very out of the loop of most of what would be at comic*con...

But I'm now, suddenly, randomly, going to try Dragon*con this year - my first real con experience (though I really want them to get at least one other SGA actor...).

I hope Boston is a fun enough consolation present!

I don't think of Ithaca and Boston as being in the same neighborhood, even globally speaking, but Google says Ithaca is only a six hour drive from here.

It would be great to get together; for ref, my email is helenw@murphnet.org.

Maybe next year... It's sad I live close by and even lived in SD a few years ago and have never been. Oh well, I'm heading to Peg3 in Jan (my first con and I'll get to meet a few people) - yeah I know London in winter, but it fit with the school schedule and makes for a good vacation excuse.

Happy Birthday!

I'm sorry you don't get to go. :(

Wanted to say Happy Birthday though! :) Hope you had a good day. :)

We should have our own "convention" for the stay-at-homes...

Boston should be nice! And one of these years I'll get to San Diego ... hopefully while my SGA geekery is still in full swing! Although, if I've moved on, I'm sure I'll be geeking on some other SF fandom that will no doubt be present at the con; I know myself well enough for that. *g*

Have fun at Dragon*con!

It makes me grin that you live close to San Diego and yet you're going to a con in *London*! But, oh, I wish I were going too ... ^_^

Thank you! It has, indeed, been a good day. And while I wish I was going to San Diego, I'm not especially broken hearted about not spending all that time on a plane...

Yeah, my travel budget is totally blown for this year! The trip to Ithaca this fall is going to do it for me. And, honestly, I've been running around so much this summer that I'm looking forward to not going anywhere for a few months...

Yea, you and 120,000+ close and personal friends. Groan. Comic Con is HUGE. It's like getting caught in a mass exodus. It must be expierenced to be belived. Come, join the madness in 2008! :) It's the end of July again in 2008 ... uhm... 24-27.

Honestly, unless you are with some huge professional or comic company, I wouldn't bother with the cost of a booth. It's very commercial these days. I ran through a pirate ship (disney), took a picture with a digital polar bear (new line) and saw Jabba the Hutt life size (lucas). + all sorts of other industry shelling of upcoming movies, video game, comics and action figures. Of course the flip side, I'd kill to have an exhibitor's badge, since they get in early and don't get kicked out, and can wander around and take photo's.

This year, MGM has a booth. VERY small, with a tall standard (the water/gate pic) from Atlantis. They are pushing some sort of bluetooth/download/ thing which I can't do and giving out a few buttons (the SCI-FI buttons are tons better). I liked MGM's booth of a few years ago, in which you could take a photo with the gate with a jaffa! :) However, they are the ones doing the autograph's this year, so as I fight for those tomorrow, I'm glad they came :) heh.

If it makes you feel any better, I know how you feel. I would love to be able to go to SDCC for the Stargate panels and meeting David Hewlett is one of my big fangirl dreams, especially after finally seeing A Dog's Breakfast. On the other hand, I don't do well in crowds, so maybe that wouldn't be the place for me. I went to Shore Leave in Baltimore a few weeks ago. I think I heard someone say that there were around 900 people there. The convention was great, very well run, but it seemed like a big crowd to me and it's extremely tiny compared to SDCC.
