--Not to mention (going off on another tangent here OH GOD I'M SORRY I WILL SHUT UP SOON!) - you could drag the whole "authorial intent" argument in here. Oddly, some of these self-same Artiste types are also the ones who will try to deny authorial intent, I believe...which seems something of a contradiction. Except that entertainment a lot of times can say more than the original creator intended it to - it will reflect attitudes of the time, attitudes of the creator, all those layers of subtext. Just because something is intended to be strictly entertaining doesn't mean it can't be replete with meaning, even unintentional...the writer who's just writing to entertain, scratching her id, still might end up saying something more meaningful and impacting than the Artiste whose message might be more trite than they imagine.
