Heh, I was thinking of Batman when I wrote the above, too -- well, the whole genre of mainstream comics in general, where "let them escape to kill again" is a standard part of the trope. And it does leave me uncomfortable. Batman is dark enough that I can imagine the comic dealing with the less heroic ramifications of that kind of morality, though.
