Meme: And more questions!

[livejournal.com profile] flingsglass asked:

What do you know about Aussie Rules and can I convert you :D (Collingwood of course!)

I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what you're talking about, which obviously means I need to be educated. (From the thread elsewhere, I'm guessing it's a sporting reference of some kind? :D )

[livejournal.com profile] kristen999 asked:

Do you enjoy what you do for a living? If you had a dream job what would it be?

I do actually enjoy my job; I'm in charge of a seven-person team that does advertising design and page layout for a 20,000 circulation daily newspaper. (Recently I've gone down to part-time, which is creating ... interesting issues and undercurrents at work, but I'm amazed and impressed that they've been willing to work with me on accommodating my personal life to that extent.) It's a nice company to work for, and I work with a great group of people and like the work that I do, which includes making advertisements, typesetting/editing/proofing copy, and coordinating the people who lay out the actual newspaper itself.

My dream job is basically doing original creative work (writing or art) and getting paid for it. I'm making small amounts of money right now, doing freelance art and such, but my ideal would be to sit around at home all day, writing novels and drawing graphic novels, and raking in the royalty checks. *g* Uh, so far I'm managing the sitting at home, but not so much the raking in of the cash...

o_O After seeing your original graphic novels, I'd kind of assumed you're working in the creative field already.

You should go to Comic Con in Juli (24-27)! I mean, there really is no better place to pitch your work and network if you want to get into the graphic novel field (also, HEAPS of fun).

I still have an open guest spot, I was actually gonna fill in that online form today. If you want, I can put your name in the guest spot so you have the option open (there's no obligation for the guest to actually show up, and I think the name can be changed when checking in, so you wouldn't be blocking the spot for someone else, if you're unsure at this point).

Actually, if you have done paid freelance work in the comic field, you should get be able to get your own pro badge.

Aussie Rules is a game where big men prance around a field wearing micro mini tight short shorts chasing around an oval ball and sticking their heads between each others legs. And then afterwards they grunt at each other and crush beer cans on their heads.

That's pretty much all you need to know.

Heee! Oh yeah, Aussie Rules, Rugby Union, they don't have no wussy padding! But they do have a fine collection of cauliflower ears, broken noses, and various contusions, bones sticking out of their limbs, and concussions. Because they're REAL man, and so deeply stupid.

Now I'm starting to want to get back into the convention circuit, but I don't know if I want to start at a show that huge. The problem I've always had with Comicon is I can't freakin' afford it! The Artist Alley tables alone are several hundred;

I wasn't thinking of table space because, yeah, I imagine that's unaffordable at CC; usually with these cons I take my portfolio and go directly to the editors (when I'm looking for work - I admit I usually go to Comic Con mainly to have fun and check out the panels and workshops). Many publishers bring editors to hunt for new talent, and they offer portfolio sessions, or you can just drop by their table and try your luck.

A friend of mine did that job two years ago - looking through portfolios - so I know for sure that her publisher come to that con specifically to find new artists.

Actual table space, or just admission? I really haven't a clue what sort of benefits being a pro at Comicon actually gets you.

No table space, but free admission for all four days of the con, plus admission to the pre-show the day before, plus some other stuff I can't remember right now. It's definitely worth it (not least because last year the con sold completely so some latecomers weren't even able to buy a ticket, and this year promises to be even more crowded).

What is really expensive is hotels space during that time. But my friend [livejournal.com profile] jwaneeta and I double booked for the 25th and the 26th at the Point Loma hostel, so we'd have a spare bed reservation we don't need (just 28$ a night) and for the other two nights, I could recommend trying the hostel downtown, or the Point Loma one again (both probably fully booked now, but people cancel all the time because, like us, they overbook first to keep their options open).

Also, if you're self-publishing... it just occurred to me that my friend Brian ([livejournal.com profile] atomicbear) usually has table space in the indie section. I think last year they were looking for artists to sit at their table for a little while, but I'm hazy on the details). And I assume the indie sections is sponsored, thus much cheaper.

How sad is it that most of the draw of Comicon for me right now is the fact that Stargate actors will probably be there? Bad artist! (But ... but there could be Hewletts!)

koff. I hadn't even mentioned that but, yes. :)

Um, if you don't have anyone else to put down as a guest, I would certainly appreciate it, but PLEASE don't put me down if there's someone else you know who might want to go,

It's no problem at all. Someone had expressed her interest, but while her eyes said 'yes' her bank account said 'no'. And I'd rather put any name down than leave that space open, because once there, it's much easier to change the name than add a guest. It messes with their projected guest count so they usually refuse to do that.

Kiwis are in Australia and snakes and man eating crocodiles are in NZ, don't you know anything?! Okay, maybe not, I was using it in a yes, I know what rugby and it's derivates are, but only because I belong to a country that worships rugby balls. My illogical logic, let me show you it. (Actually I'm impressed that you knew that.)

Extreme sports in Atlantis would be fantastic, especially for the side that had Ronon on it. John could just descretely waggle his P-90 and the game would be theirs.

Oh, I see you have the FMA icon there. Can you talk a bit about FMA and your favourites there (characters/moments/themes)?

I've found a vid on youtube here (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=TA4gmMvye5M) which explains the major rules. Followers can be a "bit" fanatical (some even face paint!) but at least we fight on the field not in the stands.

Interesting. I've never heard of it either, but...I think it would be hysterical if the atlantis team conjured up a sport like this for one of their days off. :)
