I agree with you and John's past and not having it be pretty much everyone walked on him or something like that. Having seen the way he deals with his Atlantis family - and how keeps most of them at arms length most of the time - I figured it was the same with his biological family. The problem he can't show his biological family how much he cares in the same way he does the Atlantis one...that is by risking his life on some insane rescue mission, talking someone else into killing himself to save a friend (or a the sister of friend) or any of the other ways that John shows he cares. And not everyone is as good as Teyla is at reading people.
I loved the scene with Rodney and John as well. It was just so them. Two people who are so bad at the giving/receiving comfort trying to do just that. That said, I do wish they would do the same sort of thing when other characters are not in an episode...say a scene with Ronon in last weeks episode or at least a mention of Teyla in either.
