Song lyric meme

I really can't remember which journals I've seen this on, just that it looked like fun. The rules: put your current music playlist on "shuffle" and list the first line of each of the first 30 songs (no matter how embarrassing). Post in your journal and see if your readers can guess the title and artist.

My ... some of these *are* embarrassing. It's also funny that I had to look up lyrics on some of these to figure out what the lyrics to the song actually ARE, even when I'm listening to it.

1. I sit two stories above the street "Least Complicated" by the Indigo Girls (guessed by Melibabe)
2. Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" - by Bob Dylan, though I agree with Derry that I like the Roxy Music version better (guessed by Derry)
3. I found a picture of you, that hijacked my world at night "Back on the Chain Gang" by The Pretenders (guessed by bramble_rose)
4. Way out here, working on the docks "Every Little Kiss", originally (and elsewhere in my playlist) by Bruce Hornsby, covered by Sara Evans in the version I've listed here (guessed by susnn)
5. I'm your only friend, I'm not your only friend "Birdhouse in Your Soul", They Might Be Giants (abyssinia4077, spark_force, alipeeps and Derry all got this one! And I actually thought that was going to be one of the hard ones...)
6. She's blood, flesh and bone "She's So High" by Tal Bachman (guessed by Susnn)
7. Pressure, pushing down on me "Under Pressure", Queen & David Bowie (guessed by bramble_rose (got most of it), alipeeps, Derry and les342)
8. Well, I heard some people talking just the other day "Already Gone", The Eagles (guessed by bramble_rose)
9. The Salvation Army band played, and the children drank lemonade "Life in a Northern Town" by Dream Academy (guessed by les342)
10. Look into my eyes, you will see "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" by Bryan Adams (guessed by spark_force, alipeeps, and Derry)
11. You feel like a candle in a hurricane "Stand" by Rascal Flatts (guessed by susnn)
12. Well, there she sits buddy, just a-gleaming in the sun "Cadillac Ranch" by Bruce Springsteen (guessed by Susnn)
13. It's hard to rely on my good intentions "Good Intentions" by Toad the Wet Sprocket (guessed by susnn)
14. Where did you go, why did you run "And I Think Of You" by Peter Cetera (guessed by Susnn's sister)
15. Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry "The Scientist" by Coldplay (guessed by anniehow)
16. Where is the moment we needed the most "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter (half-guessed by abyssinia4077)
17. Put on your best dress darlin' "There Will Never Be Another Tonight" by Bryan Adams" (guessed by alipeeps)
18. When I think about my life, I wonder if I will survive "Movin' On" by Good Charlotte (guessed by Susnn)
19. I think I lost it, let me know if you come across it "I Lost It" by Lucinda Williams (guessed by susnn)
20. I've been thinking, the way people do "Say It With Love" by The Moody Blues (guessed by Susnn)
21. I've run through rainbows and castles of candy "Sometimes It's a Bitch" by Stevie Nicks (guessed by susnn)
22. All the small things, true care, truth brings "All The Small Things" by Blink182 (guessed by alipeeps and Derry)
23. I saw the light, I've been baptized "Brand New Man" by Brooks & Dunn (guessed by Tazmy)
24. I remember the taste of the vintage wine, from '63 through to '69 "Vintage Wine" by The Moody Blues (guessed by susnn)
25. In your arms, I can still feel the way you want me when you hold me
26. Don't wanna be standing here with this ticket for this southbound outbound plane "Outbound Plane" by Nancy Griffith (guessed by Tazmy - who also corrected my lyric; I knew the title of the song, but I misheard the first verse)
27. There's no mistake, I smell that smell
28. Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me "All Star" by Smash Mouth (guessed by spark_force)
29. Here she come and I said "Mony, mony" "Mony, Mony" - covered by several people, mine is the Billy Idol version (guessed by Derry and les342)
30. Just a little more time is all I'm asking for

Some of these are going to be incredibly easy (my music tastes tend to be fairly mainstream), and some have more than one well-known cover, so I'll take it if you can just guess the song; you don't have to get the artist.

EDIT: Edited to reflect those songs that have been correctly guessed. Erm, if you guessed a song and I forgot to mention it, that's because I'm an idiot, and please correct me in a comment.

EDIT2: Since nearly all of them have been guessed, I'll give it a bit more time and then fill in the few remaining ones. Nice guessing everyone!

EDIT3: The remaining answers are here.

[identity profile] derry667.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm supposed to be working but...

2. A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall - originally by Bob Dylan but I like the Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry cover

5. Birdhouse in your Soul - They Might Be Giants

7. Under Pressure - Bowie and Queen

10. OMG!!! - Bryan Adams - the Robin Hood song - I think it's called Everything I Do

22. All the small things - Blink 182

29. I think it's called "Mony Mony" - I can sing some of it but no idea who it's by

[identity profile] bramble-rose.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
3. Back on the chain Gang--The Pretenders

[identity profile] les342.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
6. This is familiar, but I can't place it and crap, that's just going to bug the crap out of me now.
7. Pressure by David Bowie and Queen
9. Life In A Northern Town by Dream Acadamy
16. Bad Day by Daniel Powter
28. Crap! Another one I think I recognize, but can't place.
29. Mony, Mony by either Tommy James and the Shondells or Billy Idol

This is fun. I've never done this before. I think I'll go do this in my own journal.

Edited to reflect correct guesses (and I gave you credit for "Bad Day" -- it's by Daniel Powter; I can tell you know the song I'm talking about)
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
And you're right!

*giggles about the "Birdhouse in Your Soul" comment* That is definitely a "stick in your head" type song, isn't it?
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
yup, you're right!

(#7 is Queen & Bowie, credited as both)
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, you're right!

(Heh ... I spent one summer working 90+ hours per week for a hotel chain that would always play this song on their Muzak ... and we would laugh, because we always felt like we WERE on a chain gang.)
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, all correct!

iTunes store says that the Bryan Adams song is "There Will Never Be Another Tonight". I always thought of it the way you gave the title, though...
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yep!

I'm glad someone got that one; I *adore* that song (and I always hated that OTHER Coldplay song that always gets radio play, so go figure...)
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! And it was actually your songvid that clued me into the Roxy Music version of that song, which I've come to like better than the original! I gave you credit for "Mony, Mony" (my version is by Billy Idol, but it has been covered several times).

I thought "Birdhouse in Your Soul" would be a hard one, but more people have guessed it than any of the other ones. *laughs* I guess this is what I get when the majority of my musical tastes are stuck in the 1970s and early '80s.
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
You are correct in your guesses -- the version of "Mony, Mony" that I'm currently listening to is the Billy Idol one.

#28 - someone got that one. I'll post any unguessed songs in a day or two.

[identity profile] derry667.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I've always had a soft spot for They Might Be Giants and "Birdhouse in Your Soul" was the biggest hit they ever had here in Australia (I can still remember the film clip!)

I looked though the list with the answers added and oh. "Life in a Northern Town"! I loved that song!

Y'know, I might have to put together one of these for my LJ when I get home. This is like a musical stroll down memory lane.

*high five!*

[identity profile] derry667.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh and yeah, it's the Billy Idol version of "Mony, Mony" that I remember now.

Icon is for Billy Idol look-a-like, no disrespect ;-P

[identity profile] susnn.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
4 is Hornsby's Little Kiss

6 is Tal Backman's She's so high

11 is Rascal Flatts' Stand

13 is "Good intentions" by Toad the wet sprocket. I remember the band name because the story goes that Eric Idle made the name up for the Monty Python sketch on Rock bands notes and almost drove off the road when he heard it announced on the radio one day.

19 is Lost by Lucinda Williams

I think 21 is by Stevie Nicks, "Sometimes its a bitch"

24 is a Moody Blues song from the Sur la Mer album. I think the title is simply Vintage Wine.

Nice eclectic playlist. I'm going to have to find and listen to the ones I don't recognize.
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
You are correct! (Wow, and you even got the Moody Blues album! My sister and myself were gigantic Moody Blues fans as teenagers -- we approve! *grin* And, if you haven't heard Sara Evans -- whose "Every Little Kiss" cover is currently on my playlist -- but you like Lucinda Williams, definitely look her up! Very good folk/pop/country music with a Lucinda-ish sound!!)
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
*heh* Fun, isn't it? I just couldn't resist doing it myself!

[identity profile] spark-force.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely, geez. It's ridiculous. *Every* *time* I hear the phrase "not to put too fine a point on it"... -_-;;

[identity profile] spark-force.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and I did not actually guess #3-- that was bramble_rose. :)
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Whoops! Thanks! fixed.

[identity profile] bramble-rose.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
*headdesk* I actually own Queen Platinum with that song on it *thudthudthud*

[identity profile] sgatazmy.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
23. Brand New Man by Brooks and Dunn

26. (Do you by chance mean "outbound" plane? If so: Outbound Plane by Suzy Bogguss. (I love that song if that's the one you mean)

ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
You are correct! (And more correct about #26 than I am. The version I'm listening to is by Nancy Griffith, the original lyricist on the Bogguss version, and she does say "outbound plane" according to the lyrics sites, but it always sounded to me like she said "southbound plane" on the first verse.)

[identity profile] sgatazmy.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, isn't that funny how that works out? I do so love that song. It is running through my head now.

I knew many of the others, but didn't get to them before others figured them out. Yay for They Might be Giants!

:)

[identity profile] melibabe.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
#1 - Least Complicated by the Indigo Girls?

[identity profile] with-apostrophe.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Darg! Someone got the only one I knew that hadn't already been guessed. (I only knew 3 others!)

[identity profile] susnn.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
#12 Aha. Cadillac Ranch by Bruce Springsteen. I don't listen to the boss often but his music do have a way of stickin'.

And I can't believe I didn't get 20 immediately since it's The Moody Blues' "Say it with love"

My sister helped out on 14. She thinks it's Peter Ceterra's (sp?) Think of you

And 18 is on the playlist in my nephew's car. Moving On by Good Charlotte. "Life, hope, faith...." Woke me up. Yup.

Did I miss #6 above?

You do realize that I spent half the night hearing bits and pieces of music in my mind's ear, right? Not that I didn't enjoy it.
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Woops! I totally missed that you'd gotten #6. Yep, you're right about that -- and the others (even the Peter Cetera song, which I'd figured was pretty obscur).

Nice work! I think nearly all of them have been guessed now... *grin* I was surprised you hadn't gotten the other Moody Blues song since you even guessed the album on the other one!
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep!
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs* I tend to suck at this kind of meme! Even when I've heard the song, I have no memory for them at all (though I recognized a few of the ones on yours).
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
*snort* Actually, there IS a rather alarming resemblance there...

[identity profile] susnn.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I must have just skipped over that line in the list. You've got me ready to dust off my old vinyls and check the stylus on my turntable for a return to yesteryear. :-)

[identity profile] with-apostrophe.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Now that you've got the answers up, there's only one song on there I know and didn't get - 'There will never be another tonight' so it's my lack of musical knowledge that makes me useless at these.
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Lack of musical knowledge is my basic problem too ... or rather, my musical knowledge is just very, very narrow! Although I'm doing better-than-usual at this meme on my friend list; my real-world friends tend, by and large, to have far more educated musical tastes than mine, which make discussions of music more frustrating than anything else.
