EEEEE! Sam and Dean are back!
I love Dean's manic, forced cheerfulness at the awareness of his impending demise -- it's so funny and heartbreaking at the same time, and just so very him. I'm honestly not sure how much his whole outlook on life has really changed, though; having it out in the open like this kind of highlights the fact that he's always lived this way, trying to make the most of every chance at happiness because he really doesn't expect to live that long anyway. This isn't even depression or anything so emo as that -- it's just realism, because he lives an incredibly dangerous life. Hunters, as we've seen, don't tend to live all that long.
Speaking of which, is it just me, or are they pushing the gore factor this season? I actually had to close my eyes at the Drano scene. Ewwwww.
Bobby just can't get any more awesome. And Bobby in a suit cleans up real nice. Wow. I like Tamara a lot; the only thing I know about the casting this season is that there will be some new recurring characters, but I really hope she ends up being one of them. Or at least comes back for guest appearances.
It always startles me when I get shippy about characters, because it doesn't happen very often, but I'm weirdly shippy about Bobby and Tamara. My brain just started spinning all kinds of fanfic scenarios about them -- fighting demons together, hooking up. Hmm.
(But where was Ellen? Inquiring minds want to know.)
The one false note was the really strange and unconvincing scene with the blond individual I am now calling Buffy, since I have no idea what her actual name is. Um, as far as dreadful scenes in which to introduce a character, this was pretty high up there, what with the appearing and disappearing, the martial arts moves, the magic demon-instakill knife ... and the slow motion was just the final cliche that strained my suspension of disbelief to the breaking point. I shall choose to ignore that scene and carry on with my Winchester-boys-and-Bobby squee.
So, more squee! Dean told Sam the truth about the terms of his deal with the demon -- yay for honesty! Between the end of last season's finale, and now this episode, he's basically being entirely up-front with Sam, about the facts of the situation AND about his own emotional state. Ohhhh, Dean ...
