Being Human (UK) 3x05

Okay, all caught up now! Also, losing strength to type. Okay, just a wee bit of reaction ..

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

So, this is the kind of angst I can get behind -- angst and conflict that develops naturally out of the characters being different people, and having very different (but equally valid) ways of wanting to resolve the situation. (Though I did feel awful for the way they jerked around the poor little caseworker lady. At least Nina felt bad about it too.)

The thing is, I think Nina and George are absolutely right about Herrick. Their entire lives right now, and their friendship with Mitchell, are predicated upon the belief that people can change, that you can do terrible things and still redeem yourself. But Mitchell's right too, and he knows Herrick better than any of them. The scene with George and Mitchell -- oh, characters, oh, show. "I choose you." Ohhhh. *heartflip* I liked that George, in the end, didn't try to use force to change Mitchell's mind, just let him know the consequences of his decision and then let him choose for himself.

Herrick is a horrible, horrible person. I think this version of him is even creepier than the previous version, because he's still just as evil, but now it's a quiet, dreadfully poisonous, human evil. The scene with Cara was horrible, all the more so because no one really seemed to catch onto how awful and wrong what he was doing to her was. They didn't like her either, right? But of course, he's more than willing to turn that subtle poison on any one of them.

I love that Annie's not taken in by his sweet poison. This is the Annie I loved so much at the end of season one, that I've been wanting to see again: with a spine of steel, coldly furious and fierce when her family is in danger.

I do find it really interesting that Herrick didn't react to George's Star of David. Does that mean he's no longer a vampire? Or does it mean he's come back as some sort of super-vampire who is no longer affected by the usual weaknesses?

I must admit that I was not expecting anyone to react that strongly to the Box Tunnel "secret". I think Nina might be the only one who would have, which is probably why Herrick picked her and forbade her to tell the others. She's spent so little time in their world; the ones who've known Mitchell longer, been around vampires more, and done worse things themselves would probably be quicker to understand and accept, at least, if not forgive.

For an unpleasant moment or two I thought that Nina's stress over Herrick's revelation was going to make her miscarry, which was, first of all, a little way too soap-opera melodrama for me, and would probably also be something that George and Annie couldn't forgive, if Mitchell's lapse to the dark side caused her to lose her baby. I am infinitely glad that they don't seem to be going that way, and really hope they don't plan to do it later.

WANT NEXT EPISODE NOWWWWW.

Does anyone know if this season is six episodes or eight? I can't imagine they can wrap up all of this in one episode ...
