In other miscellany ...

I finally watched Thoughtcrimes (last SGA fangirl on the block, I'm sure). It was ... not at all what I was expecting, in a good way, and I really loved it! Freya was a wonderful character; I really loved her! And Brendan was simply adorable. :D I was all braced for unwanted UST, which was one reason why it took me so long to watch it, but actually they were very low-key and sweet. It was a neat idea to give him his own "power" (the eidetic-memory thing), which also balances hers quite nicely. And I was expecting her doctor (Michael?) to be a baddie or at least a ruthless user-type, but he actually seemed to care about her and have her best interests at heart.

I'm kind of sad that they never went ahead and made a series out of this!

Him singing the Scooby Doo theme song in his head still makes me laugh, every time. I agree it was a bummer not to get a series, but then he wouldn't have been free to do SGA. At least there is some decent fanfic out there.

I love Thoughtcrimes. I wish I could buy it on DVD, because I would watch it over and over and over. It would have been an awesome series - and instead NBC went with the show about the psychic. Mmmhmmm.

I never really thought of his memory as a power before, but that's a very cool way of interpreting it.

Love Thoughtcrimes! So much potential in that brief little bit we saw. Still think they were building it up for the doctor to have his own agenda, but he did seem to care for her and helped her, so... Plus, Brendan and Freya had just enough snark to make you believe they would work as a partnership, if not a relationship if it ever came to that.

Oh, and the actress who plays Freya might be familiar - she played the feral Slayer in Angel, and I heard she's a main character on Numbers.

Navi Rawat? I didn't realize she was in this. :)

[identity profile] cat-77.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, she plays Freya. Does an awesome job at it as well. :)

I was surprised by how much I loved it too! Freya is awesome, and she had a great dynamic with Brendan. So many points could have been trite but avoided the easy route. Also, everyone is easy on the eyes. :) I ended up burning it to disc to watch again.

It's made me sad since then (a few months ago) that there's so little fic for it -- though much of what was written was very good, and often by SGA writers, as you can imagine -- and sad when it comes to pairing-centric stories that the fantastic potential of Brendan/Freya has seemingly been neglected in favor of Brendan/Emmett from, I think, the snake movie?

But anyway. Yay Thoughtcrimes!

[identity profile] tringasolitaria.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh cool. I know her from Numb3rs, but this would have been before that. :)

Not the last fangirl on the block... this movie wasn't even on my radar - but it is now!

last SGA fangirl on the block, I'm sure

OMG *SHUNS* ;)

Heh, and yes, I watched it a while back and was surprisingly intrigued by it, and enjoyed watching it. It had a lot of potential and it's a shame that it didn't get a series order!

Oh, I only just saw it a few months ago myself. I really enjoyed it too! I think they would have made a fabulous team - but, I dunno who else would have played Sheppard so well.

I think that, if it had become a series, the doctor was supposed to be a little more evil, have some more nefarious purposes that we didn't see at first. But I liked him the way he was portrayed in the this.

TC was such a sweet show, great balance of action/drama and a twist of humor. Would love to see it now, but glad we got SGA with the correct Colonel Sheppard....but yeah, what a great cast and idea. Freya was someone I really enjoyed and Brendan was darn cute.

Brendan was so adorable, what with the giving himself pep talks and ending up the damsel in distress to Freya's kickass psychic. Freya is also one of the rare female characters on TV who really work for me, so I'd have loved to see some follow-up. Ah well, there's always fanfic.

I'm kind of sad that they never went ahead and made a series out of this!

That was my reaction. Well, I'm torn because Flanigan couldn't have done both shows at the same time... it's like having your cake and eating it too. But I would've been all over that series, had they made it. The movie showed great potential. Navi Rawat is perfect in the role (I knew her from a guest-starring role in Angel, where she was brilliant.) And Brendan, he's very cute. He's got this insecurity that Sheppard most definitely doesn't have. I want to cuddle him. :)

It's cool that this show that was never made has its own little fandom, with fic comms and everything.

a pilot for a show that was never picked up. Short synop: telepath is picked up the NSA and they pair here with an agent to fight crime. It's one of those that you'll need to scrounge up. I have it if you want, just drop me an email dossier1013 at gmail.com

TC is one of those insidious shows that gets under your skin then worms its way into your brain. I almost like the fact that there isn't any cockeyed canon to mess it up. Plus, Navi Rawat and Joe Flanigan are *both* available now....

Yeah; plus if it had been a series, it probably would've been one of those quirky short-lived series that lasts a season and a half, and most people have never heard of. But still!

*nods* That's definitely how it read to me when I got to that part, because she has her special thing and he has his special thing too! And they complement each other. :>

Yeah, I recognized her from Numbers ... or, rather, I kept thinking as it went along "... okay, she's very familiar; is that the girl from Numbers? nahhh, probably not. But she looks familiar ..." and then imdb'd her at the end. *g*

They had a really neat, easy dynamic with each other!

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really a lot of fun! I was expecting just your basic cop thing, but it's actually a very moody, almost BBC-esque show with gorgeous photography and a lot of the characters' inner lives. And there's Joe Flanigan playing a character who is a lot like a younger, dorkier and less angsty Sheppard.

(There are also Evil Muslims, but it was made at a time when ALL the bad guys on TV were Evil Muslims, so ... *shrugs*)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Brendan/Emmett? WTF? (I haven't seen that movie either ... and probably not going to. I don't think David Hewlett is enough to redeem a movie that looks that bad!)

As far as Thoughtcrimes is concerned, it's actually kind of amazing that a pilot for a show that was never made has a fandom at all! Which was one reason why I wanted to watch it; obviously it made an impression on the SGA fans, beyond just being another project in which one of the actors appeared.

I don't usually go for couples and I think Brendan and Freya would make cute partners, but I would also read Brendan/Freya, I think ...

I know - but I think it really is that good, standing on its own as a mini-movie.

[identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The TC fandom is my happy place fandom, because it's small and made up mostly of gen whumpers who I know ;) But there are pairing stories. Not my cup of tea, of course, but the ones I've come across were pretty well written.

Though a part of me would've loved to have seen this made into a series, another part is glad it wasn't. Not so much because Joe wouldn't have been able to play Sheppard, but because I doubt that show would have lasted - being a fantasy show, and what with the basic networks' track record with anything fantasy :P

[identity profile] patk.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
And - given TV's usual habit of making scientifically disputed phenomenons like this more clear and sharp, letting it border on the supernatural - having this kind of memory-ability could become pretty difficult in the long run. Never forgetting the details of something horrible you've seen (in the line of duty or otherwise)? Imagine something triggers remembering one of those memories in its full clarity without wanting to do so. Ouch. So it can be a strength (like it was in the pilot) or a weakness, if ambushed by it at the wrong moment.

[identity profile] fitzwiggity.livejournal.com 2010-05-19 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not the last SGA fangirl to watch Thoughtcrimes. I've never even heard of it, until I saw you're post.

But, then again, I'm missing out on lots of things, so this isn't really that much of a surprise to find out I'm missing on something else too.

[identity profile] alipeeps.livejournal.com 2010-05-19 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I recall reading an interview with Joe where he basically said the reason Thought Crimes didn't get picked up is cos the network decided to go with Medium (which Joe felt took the genre too seriously) and felt two "psyhic" shows was too much.

I'd heard of it, but it took me awhile to watch it because it didn't look like something I'd be interested in. But it was quite good!

Don't feel bad about being out of a loop; I'm always discovering new things I didn't know through fandom!

Oh, God, can't remember - here and there, scattered. Off the top of my head:

- lj comms for Joe Flanigan's oeuvre
- AO3
- Siria on DW, siriaeve on lj has written them, I think? & as always,
- del.icio.us.

The latter is probably your best bet; I'd start there.
