A handful of Star Trek Reboot fic/meta recs

Watching the movie has slipped me back into TOS fandom ... just a wee bit!

In my earlier rounds of fic-reading for TOS, I was really all about Spock and McCoy's bickering friendship, but since that relationship doesn't really exist in the reboot (at least not yet), I've fixated on my other favorite character, Uhura, in a major way.

What We Don't Talk About by ellen-fremedon (Spock/Uhura, futurefic, PG-ish)
Fated-in-the-stars romance is not my thing, but I have a deep and abiding love for fanfic (in whatever fandom) that takes a look at a couple not as each other's one and only True Love, but as two flawed people trying to make a connection, and not necessarily succeeding. This story is a very plausible look at the reconstruction of New Vulcan and the strain that culture clash puts on Spock and Uhura's relationship.

Uhura wanders among the giant construction robots, in Spock's wake if not on his arm, and though the brevity of the tour drives home the magnitude of their loss like nothing else has—all Vulcan, reduced to a morning's stroll!—still, the sense of hope and growth is almost palpable in the air. She's glad to have a chance to see this, Vulcan's rebirth, at its very beginning.

Two Sides by Circadienne (Uhura character fic; Uhura/Spock and suggested Spock/Kirk)
This is a lovely look at Uhura in both 'verses, and the differences and similarities in the trajectory of her life.

There's a big thing in the service about considering Starfleet as your new family, and she thinks, not for the first time, that this is fine except for how you might like to be part of your old family, too.

Noela bounces into her arms as soon as the door opens, rocking Uhura back on her heels; her big sister Lumuli, shyer, hangs back until Uhura reaches out an arm and pulls her into the hug, clutching her nieces to her. Jacob grabs her as soon as the girls let go, kisses her forehead and whispers, "Oh, I am so glad to have you home, little sister. How long do we get you for?"

"Almost three weeks," she says, wiping her eyes and grinning up at him.

House Rules by [livejournal.com profile] taraljc (Uhura, Gaila)
Adorable little glimpse of Uhura and her academy roommate. It really captures the feeling of dorm-room life and the impromptu friendships that form in school.

"No singing in the shower until at least 07:00," she'd wailed from beneath her pillow, pulling her standard Academy issue red coverlet up so green toes poked out the other end of the bed.

"No leaving three days worth of clothes on the floor," Nyota declared as she kicked her way through a pile of discarded laundry.

Academic Discourse by [livejournal.com profile] seriousfic (Gaila with a bit of Uhura, Kirk)
I'm rapidly developing a love for Gaila, Uhura's Orion roommate from the movie. This is a great look at what it's like for her to deal with others' misconceptions and prejudices about her people.

Professor Cornelius arrived, late as usual. He keyed his academic pass into the podium’s port and class began. “Today,” he intoned with a verbal wink, “you will familiarize yourselves with the Orion culture.”

Someone IMed Gaila’s terminal. Three someones, in fact. She made a point of withdrawing from the student discourse function.

Uhura meta by [livejournal.com profile] taraljc on Uhura and the awesomeness thereof. Makes some excellent points about what fandom considers a "strong" female and how Uhura's relationship with Spock is seen in that context.

I also think there is a lot of gender bias towards rejecting storylines we see as "stereotypically" female stories such as anything involving romantic love, and dismissing emotion-driven stories as not strong. And I think that's throwing the baby out with the bath water. I just don't see the ability to express love and compassion as any less strong as the ability to take or throw a punch.

The [livejournal.com profile] spock_uhura com eats my friends page every day. I'm like, how many different Spock/Uhura icons can one make? And, the fic has become too overwhelming to wade through. But, I'll definitely be checking out your suggestions. :)

Yay! Thanks for the recs. The movie has breathed new life into this fandom and it's taken off like gang busters. There's actually a Spock/Uhura fic on ff.net that has like 9 chapters, and at last count 900 reviews!!

Off to check out the comms. . . :)

Hee, yeah; I just don't have time right now for a lot of fic reading -- most of the above were gleaned via recslists or because they looked short enough to read in a brief sitting! I kinda wish I had time to really wade into the fic ... but then, maybe it's nice to just dip the surface and check out the good stuff without having to wade through the mediocre ones.

And I hear you on the icons! After watching the movie, I went online thinking "I need icons! But I bet there aren't any!" IMAGINE MY SURPRISE. *laughs*

Hope you like 'em! :) It's lovely to see the fandom experiencing an upswing -- and lovely, too, that the characters have basically taken on a life of their own, outliving even the actors and writers who created them. That's pretty cool. :)
