Stupid fingers, CONTROL THY CLICKING!
Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later ... I don't mind mild spoilers, but I really hate major ones and I have a history of accidentally finding stuff out, about various shows, that I really didn't want to know. (I've FINALLY learned to just avoid all Lost fansites while the season is running, for that very reason.) I've been skirting the edge on SGA -- I really like reading the interviews and commentary and so forth, but try not to click on anything that looks like it's going to give too much away.
So I went and clicked on something I shouldn't have.
*bangs head against wall*
When will I LEARN???
On the other hand, that spoiler goes along with a casting rumor that's very interesting to me and could be quite nifty for the cast overall, if it's true. But, aargh. I WANT AN UNDO IN MY LIFE DAMMIT!

I'm really not trying to be deliberately coy here, just trying not to repeat rumors or get a discussion going with further details on a spoiler I really wish I hadn't learned in the first place.

I don't know that I wanted to know, either, but I'm betting it's all about name recognition and sagging ratings--and we know who's fault the sagging ratings are already, don't we? But we don't get to replace the Idiots in Charge this easily, unfortunately.
/sigh/

I hate being spoiled, but I can't resist clicking spoiler tags either...

I was very upset when they killed off Daniel in SG-1 as I was (and still am) very attached to him. I first saw the episode in syndication and not having seen all the eps before hand, probably a year after it first aired. I had no idea that Michael had left the series, (not on internet back then) or seen the 'say goodbye to Daniel Jackson' trailers that had everyone else prepared. Therefore I was expecting the 11th hour save - and when it didn't come I was distraught. Of course, this being Sci-Fi, dead was relative, but and remember we have seen the decidedly dead Frasier again, even if it was only one ep.
If it does happen, the blow is now cushioned by foreknowledge, and I have to say I am relieved that it's not any of my three sweetie pies, and one of them in particular. I got very panicked there for a while.
The casting idea is an interesting one, and whilst this person would in one way bring a certain balance to the cast, I would wish for a someone of a different nationality.
Well cast changes do happen - and the previous SGA one worked very well - coz as much as I liked Rainbow/Ford, it wasn't working. The writers didn't know what to do with him. I am undecided as to whether the rumoured departee works or not, despite me also liking the actor/character.
Let's wait and see - the 'Amanda is going to be 1/2 of SGA's eps' rumour wasn't true! She's been in what, *4* altogether?

Now, regarding Our Dear Carson, I'm not buying into this whole rumor thing until I get more info. Lots more info. Because, you know, I don't think that I can deal with the stress of worrying about it. He's not dead until he's warm and dead. Right now he's just cold and has a death-like appearance. Metaphorically speaking.

And as you pointed out, the Ford cast change worked very well -- in fact, I think it's probably one of the most successful cast replacements that I've seen on TV. Unfortunately, the Stargate franchise also boasts one of the LEAST successful ones I've ever seen (Jonas for Daniel), and Frasier's never had a decent replacement either. So it could go either way.

Or maybe ... here's a novel concept for the SG franchise ... a different RACE. I'm not someone who gets so hung up on racial and gender parity on TV that it ruins my enjoyment of a show, and I love the actors that they have in most of the roles and wouldn't want to change them, but I'd also love to see the SG casting team break out of this mold they've established of casting nonwhite actors as exclusively warrior/soldier types. (Not to mention killing off almost the entire black cast at the end of Season 1.)
Anyway, even though if you'd asked me 24 hours ago I would have said I didn't want to know, and I still kind of don't want to know, I guess that I'd rather be prepared than end up with a Firefly movie moment. (I still can't re-watch that damn movie. At least not certain parts of it.)

And things can change, on both sides. And maybe it is just a rumor anyhow.
I'm much less stressy about it this morning than I was last night.

I will hang on to the thought that it is only a rumor (and all the "verified" spoilers I've read so far had no mention of it, so...)

Yeah, but remember that McKay was originally going to be an African American called Dr Ingram, (until Hewlett auditioned) and Rainbow wasn't their first idea for the role of Ford. So they intended something else and ended up with this...
Killing off the black cast? I'm honestly confused right now - please explain!
One tiny tiny bugbear I have is that Atlantis is supposed to be INTERNATIONAL, and whilst we see enough international patches to keep the UN going for years they hardly ever speak. Zelenka and Carson (& the expired Grodin) are the only real 'foreign' accents we hear given that the show is American in provenance and filmed (and mostly cast) in Canada. I have one of those pesky 'foreign' accents (I'm British) and love it when an non-North American accent and flavour is mixed into the pot - see ST:TNG, ST:DS9 & (less successfully) Enterprise. Yeah, I'm biased - and no, it doesn't really bother me that neither Beckett or Grodin are played by Brits (apart from when they fluff the accent or pronunciation) and that Nykl is also technically Canadian. Also many recurring expedition members are American - which is fine, I love the US, and am flying to Vancouver on Monday *SQUEE*, but the rest of the world is waving and saying 'here we are, acknowledge us in words and characters as well as pictures please!' An Aussie would be great, so would a Spaniard... bring back Miko... let's mix it up a bit!
PS (Once I'd watched season 6 from the beginning I really liked Jonas - in fact s6 was the 1st box set I owned -because of Jonas. Still adore Daniel though!)

Pretty much all of the regular and semi-regular characters they took off at the end of the first season were the non-white ones: Ford, Grodin, Bates -- and then Grodin and Bates' replacements (the unnamed Canadian and Lorne) were white. Miko's not dead, but we haven't seen her since season 1, either.
Like I said earlier, it's not something I'm terribly hung up on, and I certainly don't think they did it on purpose. But it was something I noticed. And I agree with you that I'd really love to see a more international flavor to the cast. It's already a given that the military members of the expedition will have to be Americans (due to the SGC running that side of things) so they really need a lot more non-American civilians to balance things out.
(Note: replied to this twice -- was logged in with the wrong -- non-Friendshipper -- LJ account the first time. Aargh.)

(Gah, again with the wrong-login thing. I don't know why I bother having two accounts ... it's such a bugger to keep track of!)

But this, I'm way more attached to Carson than I ever was with Frasier and I liked her quite a bit. So I'm hoping it won't happen but I'm afraid it's all ready been filmed if the rumors are true.
Anyway, spoilers are nuts lately. I hope people outside of the USA that haven't wanted to be spoiled have managed to avoid them on the list. I've sent out three reminders to add spoiler space but the list is so large, it keeps happening.
At least this one had spoiler space. *sighs*

Well, I'm much less upset about it now than I was at first. If it's a rumor, then it'll make his continued presence on the show that much sweeter for me. And if it's true, then forewarned is forearmed, as they say, and at least it won't be a total shock.

Now that I've gotten used to knowing this one, I'm really not so unhappy that I know. I guess I'll just wait and see if it really happens or not. The way that they've been playing up his involvement with the core group this season, really showing the friendship in a way they haven't in past episodes, does make me think that they might be setting them all up for a world of hurt. But we'll see ... and dead doesn't always mean gone in the SG universe, either.
