Thank you for the rundown! I've seen most of the movies (many childhood summer nights, the family TV was tuned to the endless TBS marathons of Bond movies) but I've actually never read any of the books. They were my little brother's thing, and I was half not at all interested and half scared that if I read them I'd have to responsibly have A Talk with him about what I even then expected to be all the misogyny and racism and imperialism and I was just a kid, too, and it's not my job, aaaaaaah... ;-)
