I do think it's a good book for reading about working-class immigrant characters in that time period! Obviously different immigrant communities are going to be different (this series deals mostly with the Jewish and Syrian Christian ones) but it really has a great sense of time and place; I never got that feeling you get with some historical fiction where the characters feel anachronistic for the time period.
