Yes, exactly - it's the style mismatch that felt like slamming into a brick wall. If the entire book had been in that general style, I would have been fine with it! (You know what you're getting into at the beginning with something like e.g. Reacher. Or Biggles for that matter.) And it was the cumulative effect of several different instances of that kind of thing that ended up burning me on the book. That being said, the parts that were good were genuinely very good.
