1. SGA premieres on Friday! :D :D :D :D
2. I updated my
12in2008 banner (which can be seen on my profile page). I pledged to write 12 stories of 5000 words or more in 2008, and the plan was that they'd all be original fiction, but that's, er, not happening, so I'm counting both original and fanfic in the total. (On the banner tally, I'm using white text for original fic and red for fanfic.) Counting the Big Bang story, I'm up to 7 of 12 completed, and, well, since it's July, I'm right on track!

naye and I may be finished with our preliminary rough draft -- or almost finished; once she's awake, she needs to look over what I wrote tonight, but I'm feeling pretty good about it. Our betas pointed out some legitimate structural problems with the story, but since we don't exactly have another month to do a total rewrite, I think we've managed to solve them pretty well within the time limits that we're working under. We have until the 25th to turn in the final draft, but I'm vanishing this weekend for a couple of Internet-free weeks in the Alaska Bush. I'll be offline until about the 23rd or so, assuming I don't get eaten by bears in the meantime. (Ha. I jest. Uh, mostly.)

tardis80 this wonderful article by Stephen King on the joy of, well, joy. The joy that we get from music or movies or TV that aren't good by any objective stretch of the imagination, but things that make us happy. And that's really the whole point of creating anything, isn't it? (This video is -- probably -- the video clip that he talks about in the article. Watching it, I was struck by how little value we place on sheer joy in our lives. Looking at that video, you can either see a middle-aged guy making a fool out of himself in the middle of Best Buy -- or a guy having uninhibited fun in a way that most of us are trained out of in our teens. We're all too likely to see the former and not the latter.)

Thank you so much for the article and video links. I kind of want to print it out just so I can write YES! all over it. I'm here for the happy, and firmly believe that if you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong. Yes, I make an idiot of myself in public on a reasonably regular basis, but I'm happy. This is good thing. Am snaffling the links to share the happy with the rest of my flist :)

I do think we place much too high a value on comporting ourselves properly in public, and not nearly enough on enjoying ourselves while we're there! Most of us get trained out of doing things like dancing in public (or squeeing over TV shows!) when we're kids or teens, by the disapproval of our peers or our own growing self-awareness. And that's SAD! I've kinda been trying to consciously train it back into myself over the last few years. I don't want to be the kind of person who frowns at someone dancing in public just because it Isn't Done.
