Isn't it great? I love everything about this book, but especially how all the characters are so decent and sympathetic and complex, all the way down to very minor ones like Elizabeth's doctor and the daydreaming mom with motion study cleaning methods who gets to be a hero! And the ending is so lovely. I also like to think that Elizabeth and Gail get to be friends.

The sequence where the hero has to carry her downstairs with her breathing on her own is particularly terrifying because not only everything, but the villains forced him to drink a glass of whiskey so he is literally drunk.
