Yeah, I think ignoring canon is the only way to proceed - in pretty much ANY part of the universe, I've realized thinking about it, because even the corners of the 'verse like Black Panther or Ant-Man where everyone survived are still having to deal with a canonical 5-years-of-dystopia time-skip.
