Yeah, from another intersection, as a depressive I was like "....but this ending where the guy who's been depressed all his life and ambiguously kills himself? or not!! is...not new." In fact IIRC if "suspicious deaths" like one-car accidents or pill overdoses were reported as suicides, the suicide rate would be much higher. (And of course, in many cases, the ambiguity is something that tortures the survivors, it's not just something to "fuel debate and discussion and possibly be the source of a few academic papers at institutions of higher learning" as one showrunner actually said.) It's not only not-subversive, in a lot of ways it's the much safer story to tell.
